My consciousness arises because of its capacity, so it cannot be inferred that it arises from the power of external objects. In any case, the objects that appear clearly to the sense consciousness at their respective times cannot be other than consciousness, which is established by the power of things themselves. The reason for this is that even what immediately follows it has the capacity, so it cannot be inferred that the capacity of external objects is established. Therefore, it should be understood that saying that consciousness is internal is what possesses प्रमाण (pramāṇa, प्रमाण, pramana, validity). Second, the elimination of the debate about the unreasonableness of cause and effect, and the unreasonableness of the sign of the effect. First, about raising the debate and its answer. First, if it is said that seeds produce sprouts and smoke produces fire, these are only dependent on external objects, so if there are no external objects, the seed itself is the agent of the sprout, and smoke is the ज्ञान (jñāna, ज्ञान, jnana, knowledge) of fire, these will become unreasonable, then. Second, the answer is that because there are no external objects, it is unreasonable to establish cause and effect, it is not like that. If it appears as cause and effect, even if it is not established as an external object, the consciousness that arises from the stable imprints, appearing as the nature of cause and effect, etc., relies on the wisdom that appears in such a definite and separate way, if it is recognized that these are causes and these are effects, then what contradictions are there? The establishment of cause and effect actions, even if what appears is the appearance of consciousness, but appearing as cause and effect, etc., does not disappear. Even if it is established as an external object, there is no appearance that is more superior than this. Therefore, the same rain that is brought down by the Nagas has different appearances for the beings of gods, humans, and evil destinies, but just like their respective appearances, the actions of cause and effect are reasonable. Therefore, seeing that this effect arises from this cause is also established in that way from the appearance of what one sees, and one cannot abandon that appearance and establish an independent cause and effect of the power of things themselves. Just like the sun appears hot, but appears cool to the pretas, then it is established as the cause of producing those cold sensations. Similarly, since the appearances of beings are different, from their respective appearances, the actions of cause and effect are undeniably established in that way, so there is no need to establish external objects. Second, about the debate and its answer. First, if according to the assumption that there are no external objects,

The appearance of clear smoke is not caused by an external fire, but arises solely from internal habitual imprints. Therefore, from the smoke as a result, one cannot infer that an external fire as a cause exists now. Even if the appearance of fire is the cause of the appearance of smoke, from which sign of smoke can one definitively infer the fire? Because before this, the appearance of fire has not been established, so the result precedes the cause. If the appearance of clear smoke is the cause of the later appearance of fire, then it will not become a sign of the result, and merely the cause will be confused with the result. Therefore, the sign of the result is unreasonable. The second answer is: When inferring fire from smoke, whether one accepts or does not accept external objects, no one's view clings to the idea that fire exists now. This merely takes a general concept as the object of consciousness, not the self-nature of fire manifesting. Obtaining the manifestation of fire from that sign occurs later, not immediately. If that is the case, then the habitual imprints steadily arising knowledge that appears as real, and the mere manifestation of smoke, in these aspects, the mere arising of the mind of the hidden fire, even the view of those who speak of consciousness-only has, and there is no more manifestation than that for others. Even when fire later appears, according to the view of those who assert external objects, attachment to the external object itself arises, but for the appearance, there is no difference, it can be experienced. Therefore, if the nature of the appearance is not lost, how can the sign of the result be unreasonable? Like this, a certain place is the subject, fire exists, because smoke exists. Even if this is stated, if someone asks, what does the mind that appears as smoke infer? Even though it is generally thought to infer the self-nature of fire, that self-nature, in the view of those who assert external objects, is the thing that can perform the function of cooking and burning in the external world. But if analyzed carefully, knowing the thing that performs the function of cooking and burning will never be anything other than appearance. Therefore, according to the view of those who speak of consciousness-only, it is merely considered the mind of the appearance of fire with clear and awakened habitual imprints, and not the self-nature of the external fire that is different from the mind. Therefore, that kind of appearance of fire can be recognized, but the external fire itself never can be, because that is impossible, like the fire in a dream. Therefore, if one thinks about the appearance of fire with clear and awakened habitual imprints, it is possible to occur.
