Otherwise, it would be a fallacy that one cannot remember an earthenware pot. Secondly, if it is said that when remembering, one does not remember other causes of remembering the object, but only the cause is the same, but the object produces a difference in consciousness that is different from other causes, then, even if the cause is the same, how can one know the difference produced by the object in the resultant consciousness? One can only rely on things that are similar to the meaning, just as confusing or mixing meaning with appearance, or appearance with meaning. What else could it be other than the appearance that arises as being similar to the meaning itself? Confusion arises from similarity, which can be seen in twins and other things, but it is impossible to confuse dissimilar things as one. Therefore, the difference in consciousness that one does not remember other causes but remembers the object is undoubtedly appearance, thus establishing the view of speaking of having appearance. If there is no additional difference produced by the object in the resultant consciousness, then the fault of remembering all causes remains. Secondly, if others think that there is no other appearance, then the way of remembering of the later memory consciousness is unreasonable. If the first consciousness that cognizes blue is not one that has both self-nature and manner, then the self-nature of the second consciousness that remembers it is to take a single grasping aspect as an object, and it abides in the aspect. From then on, for each consciousness, one cannot determine "this is this, that is that," because one cannot distinguish with a grasping mind that distinguishes hairs. Because apart from a consciousness that is merely without appearance, one cannot think of any different difference. Therefore, the consciousness that abides in having appearance, in front of the mind that focuses on the essence of things such as blue, appears as the manner of direct perception. Such a mind is mixed with things, that is, appearance is confused with things, and it appears as being related to the object and the object-possessor, that is, it appears as having both the manner of things having appearance. What does it focus on? The second mind that arises after the memory consciousness or the first consciousness that cognizes blue will focus on the manner of that consciousness that cognizes blue in that way. Therefore, all minds are mixed with things, that is, related to appearance. If all consciousnesses of objects are remembered as having the appearance of that object, and not remembered as without appearance, then the first direct perception of blue, simply because it arises from things, will be related to things, while the previous consciousness

The subsequent cognitions that do not see a direct connection with the apprehended object, blue, are not those with blue as their object. Because they have inner consciousness as their object, they become unrelated. If that is the case, these subsequent cognitions will never be distinguished by blue and recalled at the time of recollection. Because the cognition itself does not have the appearance of blue, and you assume that it is only through association with the object blue that it is recalled. If that is the case, the first cognition associated with blue might be able to recall blue through the power of association at the time of recollection. But from then on, how can one recall having the appearance of blue? Because there is no appearance of blue in the mind, and there is no connection with blue itself as an apprehended object. It is not possible to think so, because if it is not distinguished by the appearance of blue, it is impossible to distinguish the memory of grasping blue from the memory of memory, and so on. It is impossible to deny that there is no such memory, because it is proven by experience by turning slightly inward. Second, to prove without admitting external objects, prove by the sign of simultaneous perception. There are three: debate, refutation, and summary. First, the mind-sense consciousness that definitely grasps that object, together with the sense consciousness, is experienced simultaneously without before or after. How can the object of the sense consciousness, such as blue, be established as other than that sense consciousness by any kind of reasoning? Because these two are never experienced separately. Because, like the son of a barren woman, it is impossible to perceive a separate consciousness that is separated from the knowable object, and a separate knowable object that is not grasped by consciousness. And, when the object is experienced, the consciousness itself is definitely revealed as having its appearance, without before or after. And, when the sense consciousness arises, it is pervasive that the object that you think is to be grasped also appears there. For all the objects that appear, there is no appearance called object other than these. Therefore, whether the object is experienced clearly without conceptualization, or the object is experienced unclearly with conceptualization, it is certain that the object and the object-possessor appear simultaneously. It is impossible to perceive separately, sequentially, differently, and unrelatedly, so it is impossible to find the correct reasoning to prove that it is a different substance.
