It is not meant that the self-character is apprehended by direct perception and inference. The self-character is not meant to be apprehended in any way as an unmixed universal, nor as a differentiated aspect of one with many, nor as a dharma and a possessor of dharma, etc. Because in the distinctions of many terms, the divisions are not different parts of the self-characterized entity, therefore, various divisions are not permissible for the single nature. Moreover, the essence of that self-character is that it exists uniquely, having turned away from all that is not itself. Therefore, if it is expressed from the aspect of eliminating all that is not itself, it can be expressed as many as all other knowable things. However, there is no sound that can express and understand the self-character that completely cuts off all that is not itself, just as it exists, as a real object of expression. Because sound and concept are necessarily engaged in the meaning of the universal that distinguishes others. Therefore, although the sound concept of a vase can distinguish different kinds of things such as not holding water, the object of the sound concept only remains in the universal that excludes others, and is not the real self-character of the vase, just like the previously prohibited establishment and application of sound concepts, and so on. Second, regarding proving that the object of the expressive sound is exclusion. Refuting the other's system that wants to establish the object of designation. Showing that the self-system of all sounds being exclusion is reasonable. There are three refutations of the other's arguments. The first is: the self-character alone cannot be the object of expression. The universal entity alone is not the object of expression, and the self-character with the universal is not the object of expression. First, the non-Buddhist grammarian says: If you say "give fire," then you take the hot and burning, so the designation is only applied to the self-character. That is not so, because the sounds of fire and so on are designated as designations that understand the meanings of hot, burning, etc., thereby showing or understanding the object to be expressed. Why is it necessary to apply such a designation? Because the designation is applied for the purpose of making the three terms of knowing, speaking, and acting for that thing, and there is no other need than that. Even so, if the designation is only applied to the self-character, then when the term is made later, the self-character of the time when the designation was applied earlier has ceased to exist, so the designation cannot be made for that self-character.
