Regarding the explanation that although the general appearance does not actually exist in appearance, it appears as if it exists: If, like this, there is nothing actually established in the general, then by refuting or establishing it, it can be understood as self-character, the general being refuted, the particular is also refuted, the particular being established, the general is also established, etc., these are not reasonable, if you think so. The nature of a clear tree is mixed with the appearance that is presumed to be actually grasped, and if the mind of the conceptual thought that grasps the general in this way is examined, even if the meaning of the self-character of the tree is not grasped, in the state of clinging without examination, the meaning of the self-character seems to be actually existing. This is because the self-character of the tree is born from the habit of experience, and because it clings to its own appearance as the self-character of the external tree. Furthermore, the fruit produced from the tree is not for burning, but is the ultimate result that is different or opposite from other dissimilar kinds of things, produced through the self-character of the tree, whatever the general wisdom is, the nature of its own appearing object is like an external thing. And, like the image of a complete determination that returns from non-self, and, for things that appear as self-characters different from other different kinds, those who apply names will cling to this even more, and begin to use terms. Even so, for the appearing object of general clinging, such as fire, people who seek fruit cannot perform cooking and other activities, because there is not the slightest basis for observation, so the appearance is not the self-character itself. If the appearance is the self-character itself, then the appearance of fire should also be able to prevent cold, and by appearing the general appearance of the heavenly realm, one should also be able to see the heavenly realm directly. Therefore, the things of the appearing object that exist in the consciousness of general clinging, like this, appear as a nature that is different from non-tree and other things, so it also appears as one whole that is not different. And, the appearing object, such as a golden vase, also appears as a self-character that is different from similar things. Therefore, from the perspective of negation, the part that appears as a whole is called general, and from the perspective of appearing as the opposite self-character, it is called the same basis, such as "This is also a lotus, and also blue." Therefore, things that have these objects of use of returning and same basis, that is, like this, understood through consciousness and expressed through language.

Any term of expression, if analyzed, then through the conceptualization of distinguishing and categorizing, it causes those things that do not have false errors in meaning to enter and expand. If the terms all have erroneous meanings, then that term will not be able to obtain its object of reference. For example, the inference of understanding sound as impermanent, and the understanding of sound as permanent, their distinction as valid and invalid will become unreasonable. If someone thinks like that, it is not right. Because all terms of knowledge expression of things, rely on the self-characteristics that do not mix with each other, and ultimately end in this. Therefore, its own essence is the object of eliminating other additions to that thing. If the conceptualization of the term clings to anything, and if it is established on the thing as it is grasped, then, if that conceptualization has a meaningful connection with the thing and the object and the object-possessor, then, just as the term divides, it can serve as a basis for obtaining or finding the self-characteristic thing. For example, even though the appearing object of inference is the general characteristic, it does not deceive the self-characteristic as it divides, just as it was said before. Therefore, all conceptualizations of the same meaning and different meaning, although they similarly mistakenly cling to the general characteristic as the object, unlike the reversed terms such as sound being permanent, they do not equally obtain the meaning. Just like chasing after the light of a lamp because of mistaking it for a jewel, but not being able to obtain the jewel. The term sound being impermanent, just as it enters into it, can also equally obtain the meaning. Just like mistaking the light of a jewel for a jewel, but obtaining the jewel because of chasing after it. Therefore, for the term of conceptualization that has the object of elimination, it should be known that according to how the same meaning and different meaning are divided, one can obtain or not obtain the meaning. Third, the conclusion: The object of the term, even if it is various kinds of pots, only has the same meaning in terms of the result of holding water and so on. And those that do not have this result are different or opposite from not being able to hold water and so on. Like this, by means of expression and knowledge that rely on self-characteristics, even for many dharmas, one can falsely add them as one, thereby widely applying the term of the general characteristic. Holding many things as one is the seed of the general concept, and just as it applies one sound to many things, the clear thing, like a pot, can also with one eye.
