In order to fully show such things that do not produce many self-fruits, such as generating wisdom and holding water, because the pot does not have fruits, is not taken by eye consciousness, and cannot hold water, etc., it is different or distinct from other meanings, so it is known and said that this one thing, the pot, has many dharmas. Even a single pot is divided into many different dharmas such as being taken by the eye, having a large belly, a shrunken bottom, and being able to hold water. This is the seed for generating the same-base conceptual thought. Without it, conceptual thought cannot arise. In the ultimate truth, the same-base is not established. If the two common factors and the base that becomes both of these two common factors are not divided into one and three, it is impossible to establish the same-base. If there are two dharmas on a thing, they cannot be each other; if there are not, then there is not even a common factor. Therefore, it should be known that the different appearances that appear in the mind are due to the power of exclusion and inclusion of the undifferentiated appearances that appear in the essence of things, and that such terms are applied. Secondly, the self-established reason for its establishment is: this general appearance of just the meaning of sound, and the same-base nature of many differences, although they do not exist in the ultimate truth, are spoken and established as they appear by the power of conceptual thought. In the meaning of the thing itself, the general appearance and the same-base cannot exist. If it does not exist on the thing, then such an establishment does not conform to reality and becomes unnecessary. If someone asks: How are the establishment of dharma and dharmas such as impermanence and sound, and the establishment of different dharmas from different perspectives on one dharma, and the establishment of no difference from the perspective of the same kind on many dharmas, how are these established? For such a true meaning, without proper observation and analysis, relying on the power of clinging to conceptual thought, how it appears in the world, just like that, that is, without making any changes, relying on it, thereby establishing all that is to be established and that can be established, this is in order to make the self-characteristics such as impermanence and selflessness conform to the ultimate truth. The wise men who write books do this. For example, by establishing that sound is impermanent, in the essence of things, there is no difference between the three, the reason, the dharma, and the meaning. Similarly, it should be known that all terms in the meaning itself

Although there are no names, the examination that accords with the meaning of terms does not deceive when applied to the self-characterized. Therefore, the wise establish all terms such as the to-be-established and the establisher based on what is renowned in the world, mixing appearance and examination into one. There is no other way to establish terms other than this. Therefore, if we differentiate and analyze, the actual object expressed by sound is the general characteristic, and the object expressed by attachment is the self-characteristic. The actual expressing entity is the sound appearance, which is the sound general characteristic, and the expressing entity known by attachment is the sound self-characteristic. When engaging in terminology, appearance and examination are not distinguished, but mistaken as one, and thus the relationship between the expressed object and the expressing entity is established. The nature or things of the ultimate truth, the self-characterized, are distinct and do not mix by their very nature. For example, sound and impermanence are of the same nature, but there is no difference in meaning. To think that the self-characterized is many with the same nature, and to hold that one self-characterized has many separate qualities, is to be misled by discriminating mind. Therefore, the distinction or special term of "that is general" and "this is special" applies to the meaning or object of discriminating mind that comes from seeing the self-characterized, but does not directly apply to the self-characterized itself. If one wonders how different qualities can be established in a false object of discrimination, it is because one is particularly attached to the self-characterized in that object of discrimination. Just as the self-characterized is different from all other self-characterized, here too, by designating what is not made and permanent as different from others, it appears as having exclusion. It is on this appearance that one distinguishes and thoroughly examines the various differences of qualities such as made and impermanent. Therefore, the experience of seeing the self-characterized of things is lost in the discriminating thought that "sound is impermanent" and in the inferential discriminating thought that "it is established because it is made." Therefore, one should understand that one does not grasp the self-characterized distinguished by impermanence and so on. If so, what does it mean that Master Dignāga said, "Inference grasps the distinctions distinguished by the exclusion of others"? That refers to the distinction, such as fire, that is mixed or blended with the general characteristic that appears in the mind of discrimination. It is in relation to this attachment that it is called distinction, but not the distinction itself.
