That is not permissible, because with regard to the meaning of "kalpa," it will ultimately become like the thoughts of ordinary people. If one thinks that even if the object is not realized at that time, it is reasonable to be a valid cognition because it can be realized through these causes, it is not so, because all things that benefit the act of realizing the meaning of the object to be measured, even if they are closely associated for the sake of that act, are merely causes and cannot perform the act of realizing the meaning. However, whichever mind arises at the very end of the collection of causes, which is able to truly make the nature of that object unmixed or distinct from others, that is the proof of establishing whether that object exists or not, is or is not, or the excellent proof of that act of realizing the meaning, that is, it is considered to be the correct proof. It is meaningless to accept all the causes of its lineage as valid cognitions that measure the object as it is, just as when eating rice to relieve hunger, one searches for the outer shell of the seed, and when lighting a butter lamp to dispel darkness, one investigates the source of oil and trees, etc. Second, refuting that sense faculties are valid cognitions. Refuting that specific consciousness is valid cognition. Refuting that the connection between sense faculty and object is valid cognition. First, in this way, the corporeal sense faculties are the same for all cognitions that are their own results, that is, because they are merely common causes. For actions that are the same in meaning but realize different meanings, such sense faculties do not have the action of valid cognition that measures objects, in this way, the eye faculty is merely the cause of apprehending blue and apprehending yellow, etc., and for its own nature alone, it does not have any ability to distinguish individual objects. Someone says, sense faculties are not without differences either, because the sense faculty at the time of encountering each object is the one that realizes that object, and moreover, the differences in clarity and unclearness of the sense faculties are also individual. Even so, although the sense faculties that are the basis are individual, the sense faculty itself does not have the ability to distinguish objects. If there is no individual realization from the same meaning, then from what reason does the statement "this is this" for blue, yellow, etc., individually, or "the object-possessor valid cognition of this object is this" come? It cannot be established at all. Therefore, if there is knowledge of the same meaning, one can distinguish the object in that way, otherwise, even if one thinks for a kalpa, one cannot make the connection between the valid cognition and its object, just like a blind person passing it on.

That's all. This line of reasoning also explains the remaining parts, such as considering seeing as valid cognition, in a similar way. For example, the Vaibhashikas and others consider the consciousness that observes objects as valid cognition. From this, the determination of things distinguished by types, etc., is the result of valid cognition. From this arises attachment, from this begins the act of taking objects, from this objects are obtained, and from this the pleasure of experiencing the fulfillment of desires arises. Each preceding one is valid cognition, and each succeeding one is its result. All these statements are because valid cognition itself has no function, and merely relying on the cause cannot measure the object to be measured. Only when the meaning is the same can the function of completely determining the object be accomplished. Therefore, the same object of valid cognition cannot be repeatedly determined by multiple valid cognitions. If the meaning is not the same, then no valid cognition can do this. Therefore, such a classification is like fruitless labor, like a blind person leading a blind person. Second, refuting what is inconsistent with one's own system. First, if there is no sameness of meaning, it is unreasonable to regard the apprehension of characteristics and the characterized as valid cognition and result. If the consciousness of "sameness of meaning," which appears as the entity of the object to be measured, is lacking, then the consciousness that apprehends characteristics such as blue will not be able to distinguish "this and that are different," just like closing one's eyes and wanting to distinguish the characteristics of the color and shape of the vase in front. Other consciousnesses that apprehend the characterized are also the same. If there is no sameness of meaning, it is impossible to know what the characterized is like. If there is sameness of meaning, then the consciousness that manifests that meaning performs the function of measuring that object. Therefore, it is meaningless to separate the apprehension of characteristics and the characterized. Furthermore, you also do not think that the act of understanding meaning and the valid cognition that proves it have different objects to be measured, but it is also unreasonable to think that they are different. If only characteristics are apprehended, then it is necessary to apprehend its shape and color without grasping the vase; if the characterized is apprehended without grasping the characteristics, then it is necessary to grasp a vase that is empty of shape and color, but such a situation is impossible in any case. Thus, it has been established and admitted that the objects of apprehending characteristics and the characterized are not different. Therefore, if it is said that the objects to be measured of these two are the same meaning, then apprehending them twice, earlier and later, is meaningless, because at the time of the first apprehension.
