Then it would be impossible to know. If one thinks that things are grasped nakedly, even if it is allowed to grasp in that way, then how is the so-called grasping of things grasped? If it is said that it is grasped from appearance, then is the appearance the thing itself and does not exist in consciousness, or is there also a difference of appearance produced in consciousness? If it is the former, then all things that are close and the things of kalpas will appear simultaneously, or none will appear, because it is thought that the consciousness with an object does not produce the difference of appearing due to being close to the thing. If it is the latter, then on the level of consciousness, a difference of appearance that has never existed before is produced due to being close to the thing, and this is called "meaning-likeness." By virtue of the appearance of meaning, for the thing that appears, this consciousness must become a valid cognition. If it is not so, then consciousness can never become a valid cognition for any thing. If it becomes a valid cognition, then one consciousness will also become a valid cognition for all things, because it does not admit the difference produced by things. Therefore, if "meaning-likeness" is carefully analyzed, then there is no choice but the apprehended aspect, but here such a detailed analysis is not made, but simply calling the arising of a consciousness that corresponds to the thing as "meaning-likeness," and this much should be commonly admitted by both internal and external parties. Third, the debate rebuttal to the establishment of "meaning-likeness" as the reason for establishment is: In measuring things, "meaning-likeness" itself is not the most important, because the consciousness itself that is similar to the thing will also become different due to whether the sense faculty is clear or not, etc., and therefore is dependent on others. Therefore, the sense faculty itself is the main factor in measuring things, so why is it not the reason for realizing things? Because of various factors such as whether the sense faculty is clear or not, whether the basis is pure or not, the distance of things, attention, the degree of habituation, etc., the nature of the consciousness arising from these factors is the difference of clarity or not, etc., even if the difference is produced, the cause of producing the difference, such as the sense faculty, etc., is not related to the thing and the measured object, the measurer. Because the clear or unclear consciousness is related to the thing to be done, that is, the appearing thing, and this relationship is not something other than the nature of the thing appearing clearly or unclearly, therefore, this consciousness is established as the realizer of that thing. When the eyes are clear, both blue and yellow appear clearly, and when they are unclear, both do not

Although the (objects) appear clearly, in order to understand how one's own mind changes in relation to one's own objects, although there are differences in the function of the sense faculties, the sense faculties themselves can never sever the objects, because just as a blacksmith, whether skilled or not, the knife he makes can cut a tree. Therefore, the main thing that measures the object is knowledge, not its cause, such as the senses. The second view is that valid cognition and its result are the same in essence, but are distinguished only by their opposite aspects. That is, the same thing that is established as valid cognition, from the point of view of its being the agent, that same thing, in terms of its function of measuring the object to be measured and knowing, is established as the result of valid cognition. And the proof that it has the function of measuring the object to be measured and knowing is just that the nature of the object to be measured appears manifestly in the mind. If someone asks: How does this blue cognition know the blue object? The answer is: Just as it cuts, in terms of obtaining the blue object to be measured itself, this object-possessor is established as having the function of knowing the object. Just as one thinks that this axe has the function of cutting a tree, one cannot find any other proof than the appearance of the tree being cut. Therefore, the worldly conventional actions are also present in this same thing, and this cannot be denied. If the mere appearance of the object does not establish that the object-possessor has the function of knowing it, and there must be something else to prove that function, then the measuring knowledge can never establish a relationship with its object to be measured or acted upon, such as blue objects, because that measuring knowledge itself does not have the function of knowing that object, just like the senses, etc. Before knowledge itself performs the function of knowing the object, it is impossible to find any other proof of knowing the object in the three realms. If someone thinks: Haven't you seen that apart from the agent axe, there are also different actions of rising and falling? The answer is: The action of cutting after the axe and the tree come into contact is none other than the axe itself. If there were another action, then it would not be the axe that cuts the tree, but that different action that cuts, but such a situation does not appear, so it is negated. The moment of the axe rising in the sky, because it does not come into contact with the tree, it cannot cut, and the appearance of rising and falling is merely the direct perception of the moment of the axe in a different object, and it is not the perception of an action different from the axe.
