If it is said that because the eyes and other faculties are different, there are changes such as clarity and unclearness. According to this system, how can it be established that the minds of the five sense consciousnesses, such as the ears, also have different objects such as sounds? Even if all objects are the same, they appear separately through the door of the dependent faculties, which can be established in meaning. Even if the two, conceptual thought and sense consciousness, are different as the basis of the mind and arise from this, what is the reason why the object of apprehension, the same object, appears in various ways such as clarity and unclearness? It is not reasonable for the object of its own characteristic to appear in various ways from the nature of the object itself to the mind that directly measures it, just as two undisturbed eyes measure a blue lotus. If it changes like a person with yellow eyes and a person without eye disease looking at a conch shell, then it will not become an unerring direct perception. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that one's own character is seen differently through the door of dependence. Because the experience of an undisturbed mind sees different things, it is a different object, like pillars, vases, sounds, and shapes, and so on. Second, there is direct perception of the general, because after directly seeing the cow, there is recognition. When a white cow is seen before, and a red cow is seen later, even though the self-characteristics are different, it is recognized because it has been seen before, because it has seen the general, otherwise there is no reason to recognize it. If it is said that it is not so, it is uncertain, even if the self-characteristics seen by the sense consciousness are not truly realized, one can also express words to the past, future, etc., and the distinctions of those can be applied only by intention. First of all, the arising of the conceptual thought of recognizing cows, etc., after directly seeing the general, is prohibited or refuted. Even if the general is not seen, in the realm of conceptual thought, things with similar appearances are thought to be of the same kind, just like thinking of past people as people. Therefore, since the object of seeing and conceptual thought is not the same, thinking of similar things as the same kind is not only through seeing. Some people think that when seeing cows and other things, there are common following lineages and self-natures, etc., so there is a common verbal expression.

Those thoughts that arise from the same category as thoughts, and inference that arises from mutually following each other, that is also refuted by this reasoning, which shows that thoughts and sense consciousness have different objects. If one asks, then what is the experience of recognizing again what has already been seen? The seeing of sense consciousness is indeed the individual characteristics that are each different, but the one thought that is called recognizing in the same category is not caused by the power of generality, but is done by the nature of things being the same, as has already been explained in detail before. Second, regarding mental direct perception. The debate that mental direct perception is unreasonable is presented. To that, the distinctions of the answer are explained. First, the Tirthika Naked One says: If the previous experience of sense consciousness is again apprehended, then because the previous valid cognition has already determined the apprehension, like memory and so on, the mind is not a valid cognition. If mental direct perception apprehends something else that sense consciousness has not seen, then because it does not rely on it, the blind and so on could also directly see objects such as form with the mind, so mental direct perception is unreasonable. Second, the answer is divided into: the answer to the first fallacy and, likewise, the answer to the second fallacy. Here, the unreasonable debate is eliminated. First, some of the students of Master Dignāga say: Mental direct perception means that what has already been apprehended by sense consciousness is apprehended again, but that is not the case. Because it does not apprehend what has already been apprehended, there is no harm of the first fallacy. To that, it is said that it is unreasonable, saying that what has already been apprehended by the senses is apprehended again. Is the immediately preceding condition of mental direct perception, the object apprehended by sense consciousness, momentary or not momentary? If it is momentary, then because the object apprehended by sense consciousness is momentary, it has ceased after being apprehended by sense consciousness itself, so at the time when mental direct perception arises, the past meaning cannot be directly seen by the present mind consciousness. If there is no object to be apprehended, how can it be said to be apprehended again? Because it is impossible for the two consciousnesses, earlier and later, to repeatedly apprehend a single moment. If the object to be apprehended by mental direct perception is not momentary, then all direct perceptions have transcended the object of a moment, and the characteristic of mental direct perception as a valid cognition must be said to be like this with particularity, but that is impossible.
