Secondly, according to the tenets of those who accept external objects, the meaning of no characteristic is: The aggregates such as form, the sense bases such as the eye, and the elements, etc., are all collections of various distinctions, and all characteristics such as the gate of birth and the meaning of lineage are merely imputed from the distinctions of the actions of each object to be signified. Moreover, if one examines it as it is, the name and the signified are merely imputed by the mind as different, and they are not truly established. This also means that those dharmas are said to be devoid of their own characteristics. Secondly, refuting contradictory reasons: Although empty, it is reasonable to appear as two. Refuting uncertainty about that. First, if it is already established from the beginning as merely self-awareness empty of two, then how does it appear as two in the absence of two? It is true that if there is no defilement, it does not appear, but due to the power of defilement, even if it does not exist, it does appear. For example, the ignorance that has existed since beginningless time, which is not afflicted, appears as the duality of grasper and grasped, and for those who manifestly cling to appearances, whose minds are defiled, whatever habit of the appearance of things as they are, depending on some distinction of inner consciousness, the cause of their own awakening, will cause the mere appearance of inner consciousness to arise as a dualistic appearance that is not the suchness of non-duality. For example, for those with cataracts, hairs, flies, and two moons appear. Therefore, all beings who have not seen the meaning of suchness beyond the realm of dualistic appearances on this side do not truly understand the suchness of emptiness of two, because there is no ordinary being who is free from the defilements of grasper and grasped. If that defilement does not exist, then the ordinary being will also not exist. Therefore, even if one has experienced happiness and so on as one's own nature without an object, one cannot realize it as it is because one is defiled by delusion, just as one cannot see the moment. As it is said in the Differentiation of Dharma-Nature: That which appears, the Dharma-Nature does not appear, and because that does not appear, the Dharma-Nature appears. Therefore, for the Buddhas who have eliminated all defilements of delusion, suchness will appear as it is, but those who are bound by defilements cannot fully manifest it as it is.

So. Like this, the self-awareness that is empty of two, to be known individually by oneself as it is, is the Dharma nature of the Mind-Only school that completely embodies the two selflessnesses. As it says in the Sutra Requested by Light-Protected, "To say 'exists' is one extreme. To say 'does not exist' is another extreme." And so on, relating to the grasped and the grasper, permanence and impermanence, arising and non-arising, etc. Whatever is in the middle of these two extremes is unthinkable, unteachable, without a place, without appearance, without discrimination, without a place, and by these, the non-discriminating wisdom is taught. The meaning of these is in the Dharmatā-vibhāga: "From non-appearance, there are two, and how they are manifestly expressed, sense powers, objects, and discriminations, and the container world, because they are without appearance. Therefore, this is unthinkable, unteachable, without a place, without appearance and without discrimination, without a place, called the characteristic of non-discriminating wisdom, as stated in the sutra." As it is said. Second, if there is no delusion, it is not certain that there is no dualistic appearance, because even the Buddha, who is free from all delusions, has thoroughly taught the nature of the aggregates, elements, and sources, so did he speak in that way after seeing external objects? If so, then the one who is free from the delusion of dualistic appearance, in order to comply with the thoughts of sentient beings who have dualistic appearance, temporarily abandoned teaching the non-dual Dharma nature that is the meaning of suchness. For example, the Buddha is like an elephant who sees the other side but deliberately does not look at it, pretending not to see it. Similarly, although the Buddha sees suchness, he does not teach it to those who cannot understand it, even though he sees it, but takes the way of seeing of an elephant, and only in accordance with the world, he observes external objects such as form and establishes their characteristics. As it is said in the sutra: "Monks, contemplate how things appear, and do not cling to the opposite of how they appear." Having taught in this way, he gradually leads them towards suchness. Second, regarding the answer of terminology. It is reasonable to establish a single consciousness, the external object is not similar to this. First, in ultimate truth, consciousness is diverse.
