It is said that "it should be applied," which is the sign of self-nature, that is, the term established by the gate of the senses. This dharma, the subject, consciousness, can be applied to this, because it is the expresser of this. For example, like the sound of a drum and a barley sprout, this is the sign of self-nature. Such a term follows the expresser and is the pervasive self-nature. Such application is because it is reversed, that is, the pervasive expresser also becomes reversed. For example, whatever cannot be applied is not its expresser, such as eye consciousness being color consciousness, drum sound being stick sound, and barley sprout being soil-grown sprout. On the opposite side of such a dharma that should not be applied, the expresser is also impossible to exist. Whatever is the expresser must be able to be applied, which is pervasive. Therefore, the Treatise on Valid Cognition says: Because it is a non-common cause, its term is made by the senses. Second, refute wrong conceptions about the self-character of objects, and refute the idea of taking non-objects as objects. First, eliminate wrong conceptions about the meaning of the scriptures, and establish it according to the meaning of the scriptures. First, prevent others from holding different views on the meaning of the sutras, and explain the meaning of the sutras according to Vasubandhu. First, those who say that there is a general characteristic in the realm of sense consciousness say: The Abhidharma also says: The five aggregates of consciousness are those that focus on accumulation. Moreover, the teacher Dignāga said in the Treatise on Valid Cognition: There, because it is produced by many meanings, the self-meaning is the object of the general characteristic. Thus, the object of sense consciousness is the general characteristic, because the reason is that if extremely fine dust exceeds the senses, it will never become the object of the senses, so accumulation is the object of the senses, and accumulation is merely the collection of many dust particles, so that is the general characteristic of the collection. Otherwise, the nature of each dust particle is no different from before, so it is unreasonable to become the object of the senses, because this is the object of the senses. Therefore, the sense consciousness that focuses on that general characteristic is the consciousness that has that general characteristic as its object. Therefore, undoubtedly, all sense consciousnesses are connected with conceptual thought and following, because they are the objects of the general characteristic. If you say so, that is not right. The so-called general characteristic and coarse appearance are from the dust particles.

A weakened root has no substance capable of generating sensory power. So, when accumulating, what is the object of focus? If the subtle particles beyond the senses abide in their respective self-natures, those subtle particles that do not generate sensory consciousness, because they gather with other subtle particles as cause and effect, and are manifestly related, therefore, the special particles capable of generating sensory consciousness become any other state, or arise in that way, those are called accumulation, but there is no different substance of the general and the part called accumulation. At the time of such aggregation, the particles with the specialty of being able to generate sensory consciousness are the cause of the arising of the apprehending consciousness, because by the nature of dependent origination, sensory consciousness arises when aggregated, just as consciousness arises when object, sense, and attention are aggregated, and does not arise when not aggregated. Secondly, the teacher Vasubandhu said: "Those that are objects of their own characteristics of the sense bases, such as what is to be apprehended by the eye, are considered as the five aggregates of consciousness, but not the nature of matter." Because of this statement, both this treatise and the Compendium consider sensory consciousness to be of a general object. If you think so, the meaning of the scripture is not like that, that is, in the Abhidharma it is said: "Sometimes, even blue alone can generate eye consciousness, and sometimes, a collection of blue, yellow, etc. generates eye consciousness." If it is argued that if the five objects of form, sound, etc. are held together, how can it be the object of its own characteristics? In response to that, the teacher Vasubandhu said: "Whether blue, yellow, etc. are separate or aggregated, as long as it is the nature that produces eye consciousness, that is the self-characteristic of the sense base, that is, those of the same kind are called the same substance of the sense base." That kind of grasping is that when seeing variegated colors, all of those blue, yellow, etc. can be one self-characteristic of the sense base, but at that time, the self-characteristics of each of the blue, etc. substances are not necessarily the object of their own characteristic object, but all are grasped simultaneously. Thus, the opponent's idea is that instead of grasping each of the blue, etc. individually, they grasp the general characteristic, and that is a wrong understanding.
