Even if my words could explain it, if the function of the senses such as the eyes does not reach the object, merely uttering the name of another with words will not clearly reveal its own nature. Therefore, it is known that the name cannot truly express it. If, even without applying terms to the sense object, there is a grasping of self-nature, there is also a grasping that mixes sound and meaning, because the object is born mixed with its own name by its very nature. However, the relationship between name and meaning is an accidental occurrence made by the mind of a person when the object is not established by its own nature. It is not something that exists in the object by its own nature without being made by a person. If it were, then without being shown by others, assigning names, and becoming familiar with them, one should also know 'this is what this is called' just by seeing the object, which is impossible. Second, it is shown that seeing and discrimination are not the same. Here, disputes are refuted. First, some say: What is seen by sense consciousness is with discrimination, such as when seeing a vase, one grasps 'this is a vase,' and even if one is not familiar with terms, one grasps 'what is this,' which is established because the two are not perceived as separate. If they are separate and simultaneous, then it would follow that both clarity and non-clarity appear on one object. If they are not simultaneous, then one is separated by the other, so it is impossible to appear continuously. The answer is: This fault does not exist. In our own system, it is permissible for consciousness with and without discrimination to function simultaneously on one object, so they are mistaken as one and not known as separate. Or, because the function is rapid, it is permissible for appearance to occur without interruption. As others allow, although the two arise sequentially, they are mistaken as arising simultaneously. In any case, fools only cling to seeing and discrimination as one without distinguishing them, but they are not one. Second, disputes are refuted in a compromising way. Refuting its faults. First, if seeing and discrimination are separate, then separated by discrimination, even if the function of the senses does not weaken, seeing will be interrupted, because the types of clear and unclear consciousness are separate, so they may hinder each other. If so, then it will be harmed by the direct perception of seeing without interruption. The answer is: For those who allow simultaneous function, consciousness of different objects

Although arising and ceasing are the nature of phenomena, this reasoning cannot harm it. First, the answer to the objection is: Even according to the view that considers others' perceptions as one, when seeing a pot, if different thoughts of other kinds, such as cows, arise, how could it not be that what is seen is interrupted? The pervasiveness is established because you yourself have admitted it. The reason is obvious, because when seeing a pot, thoughts of cows, etc., are seen to arise. Second, refuting the answer: That other view itself cannot be established. The example and meaning of that answer are inappropriate. First, if a torch is spun, although it enters the front and back positions sequentially, because the entry is fast, the front and back parts are added together, and it is seen all at once as a continuous circular wheel. Similarly, even if different kinds of thoughts are interrupted by unclear objects, because the appearance of the sensory object is powerful, it is seen as if it were continuous. If you think so, then saying such a thing is not beautiful, because even in other views that consider sensory consciousness to be non-conceptual, if it is used as a reason for the appearance of continuity, it is the same, so it is not permissible at all. Second, refuting the meaning and refuting the example. First, abandoning the object and its inappropriateness. First, even if interrupted, it appears as if it were continuous because the entry is fast, which is inappropriate. If it appears as if it were continuous merely because the entry is fast, then letters like "sa ra" and "ra sa" would also be heard all at once without sequence, because they are quickly grasped without interruption. If you think so, then "sea" and "taste" cannot be used as separate expressions, and because it is obviously negated, it cannot be thought so. If you think that even if it is not interrupted, it appears sequentially, then the torch does not appear sequentially, and what is the reason for this appearance? Because you think that there is no other reason than speed. In this view that believes that two consciousnesses cannot enter at the same time, when the six senses, which have all six objects from form to dharma gathered together at once, arise, six consciousnesses arise. Even if the appearing objects of these six appear without difference, according to your view, even if any one is interrupted by the other five, because the entry is fast, each one also appears as if its own continuum were uninterrupted.
