If, after seeing a sandalwood fire, one recognizes that the fire is present now through the sign of smoke, that is inference. Moreover, because there is a reason that can ascertain that the smoke is related to sandalwood, it is reasonable to infer the fire from that smoke. At that time, since the self-characteristic of the fire is not seen, there is no content of direct perception whatsoever. Although one can ascertain that it is smoke related to a sandalwood fire, if the reason is not seen, one can only infer fire in general, and cannot ascertain that it is a sandalwood fire. At that time, if one thinks that the previous fire still exists now, that is merely a thought that confuses the past and the present. Thinking that the previous fire is also here from signs such as smoke, because that sign is not confused with merely fire, although it is an effect-sign, thinking that the previous one is this one is a mistake. It is impossible to see again what was previously seen directly, because self-characteristics are momentary. Although direct perception measures the self-characteristic of that object that was seen at the time of seeing, grasping the past and present as one is an error of conceptual thought. Having analyzed in this way, the objects of the two valid cognitions exist without being mixed. The object of direct perception is always only the self-characteristic, and the object of inference is always only the universal characteristic. Even though inference is not a valid cognition, the objects of other minds that are not direct perception are all only engaged with the universal characteristic. Therefore, when the distinction between conceptual and non-conceptual is made, it becomes the third category of object for valid cognition, and one can realize that it is impossible for multiple valid cognitions to repeatedly know the same object. Secondly, the attachment to "it is the previous one" through the means of connecting other things, the former and the latter, into one with the mind, is understood by learned scholars who understand reasoning to be merely a recollection of what was previously seen. From what was previously seen, or when seeing something else similar to it, that is merely a recollection of the previous experience. Even so, one may confuse similar things as one and falsely assert, "The previous one is this one." Thirdly, if one argues that the later thought sometimes relies on signs, and therefore is not merely recollection, because in recollection, one can recall previous experiences even without signs, such as inferring fire from the smoke of sandalwood in a room, etc., the arising of that thought from seeing the sign, and the fact that what was previously seen becomes a sign for later recognition, therefore it is a valid cognition. That is not correct, because the sign does not

For example, inferring this year's smoke from last year's fire, or inferring this year's fire from seeing last year's smoke. Because seeing similar signs or phenomena awakens past experiences, even if it becomes a condition for memory, it will not turn into memory. Second, regarding the nature of direct perception (mngon sum) itself: Explaining direct perception प्रमाण (tshad ma, pramāṇa, valid cognition) itself, explaining pseudo-direct perception (mngon sum ltar snang). First part: Explaining the definition of direct perception, explaining the differences of the four bases (mtshan gzhi). First part: Establishing the exclusion of conceptualization (rtog bral yongs gcod), negating the divisions of conceptualization (rtog bcas rnam bcad). First part: Establishing the proponent's own system of establishing non-conceptualization (rtog bral sgrub byed), negating the views of other interpreters. First part: The way direct perception is established through inference (rjes dpag). First part: In the Sutra on Valid Cognition: "That which is free from conceptualization, which combines with names, genera, etc., is direct perception." And: "The mind also, with objects, attachment, etc., self-awareness is without conceptualization." As the meaning of these and other statements, in order to negate the inverted conceptualizations of the nature of direct perception प्रमाण (tshad ma, pramāṇa, valid cognition), first of all, to establish that all direct perceptions are non-conceptual. Generally, there are three types of conceptualization: the conceptualization of essence exists in all consciousnesses, it is merely conceptualizing and knowing the object; the conceptualization of investigation has a coarse aspect, it does not exist in the minds above the actual and special consciousness of the first dhyana (bsam gtan dang po); what is to be removed here is the third type, which is the conceptualization that can mix sound and meaning. If a scholar who has not fallen into the propaganda of evil tenets can straighten his mind and examine it, then the consciousness of direct perception is free from conceptualization, and it can be established by the direct perception of self-awareness itself without relying on any signs. For example, the conceptualization or conceptual consciousness of all people has a basis in names, that is, it can be mixed with names. When one is proficient in terminology and grasps the mixture of name and meaning, the conceptual consciousness arises merely by the power of terminology, which is to be known by each individual, and is established by experience. When the mind is withdrawn from all aspects of the object, and no conceptual consciousness is scattered, when the inner awareness abides immovably, even if the appearances of conceptualization cease, the appearance of forms to the eye will not cease, and that clear consciousness is the consciousness born from the sense power. Therefore, sense consciousness is the division of the nature of
