If one thinks that by holding its own characteristics as something beneficial, there will be no fault of holding everything. Then, it is not permissible for you to consider the conceptual mind's holding as an accomplishment. If one sees sound as being beneficial like being created, then in that case, considering it as unseen, impermanence is the same for sound and things, because it is not other, so if one holds onto something that is beneficial to anything, then there will be the fault of holding everything. If everything is determined by seeing it before, but later a mistaken inversion occurs, in order to dispel it, if one wants to introduce another inference later to what was previously determined and held. Then, the determination by valid inference is established as having an object of discernment by eliminating the superimposition on the opposite side, but it is not an accomplishment. If it is just repeatedly holding what was previously determined, then inference is not needed because superimposition has not arisen. So, if it has been determined before and no new superimposition has arisen, then is the mind that determines it in that way an accomplishment? No, it is not. The conceptualization that has been seen and determined other than the inference that eliminates superimposition is only the object of elimination, just like that inference. Because the reason is that the conceptualization that enters through the door of definite grasping is the very object that eliminates or lacks the opposite superimposition. Another fault is that it is unreasonable to say that what was previously determined and held is again determined and held by inference. What is newly to be determined by inference, such as the nature of impermanence, what is determined in sound itself, and what is determined as being created, etc., what is not determined by the other previous determinations, how is that the object of those previous determinations? Because they were not able to determine it, so a new inference is introduced. Then, it is the same for you, although everything is held at the time of direct perception, but later you want to introduce inference, if you think so, then it is not the same. On the thing sound, there are different parts of the distinguishing qualities such as being created, impermanent, etc., the self-characteristic that abandons these, even though direct perception holds it, it is not pervasive like holding it as certain, because what is the cause that leads to the recognition or determination of the distinguishing qualities as they are, that is the conceptualization.

Therefore, even when appearances are not mistaken in direct perception, the subsequent conceptual mind is only a matter of "certainty" or "uncertainty." If direct perception itself had certainty, no one would be mistaken. Thus, if the cause of certainty—the experience of direct perception—also has conditions, then it can lead to certainty. But if there are no favorable conditions or if there are unfavorable conditions—causes of confusion—then merely seeing cannot lead to certainty, as with the thought that sound is permanent. What are the favorable conditions? Clarity of inner mind, habituation, appropriate timing, focus, and the force of the object itself, etc., are the complete requisites for inducing certainty. Among these, clarity of mind refers to how yogis, with their clear minds, can ascertain things like moments just by seeing them. If one is accustomed to the object to be ascertained, then merely trusting what is seen can easily lead to certainty. For example, internal habituation is like how, for the same corpse of a woman, ordinary people think of decay, those with desire think of sexual intercourse, and dogs think of food. Similarly, whatever has a strong tendency of habituation causes things to be perceived in that way. Therefore, the habit of mental engagement that accords with the form of the object, or its imprints, is also a condition. Appropriate timing refers to, for example, when the appropriate time for talking about medicine etc. arrives, seeing a doctor, even though that person may have many other qualities, one is certain that he is a doctor. Similarly, focusing specifically on something leads to certainty. For example, among many people, if one specifically focuses on whether someone is present or not, then merely seeing them leads to the certainty that they are present, even though other things appear as direct perception, the certainty of whether they exist afterwards is not necessarily certain. The force of the object itself refers to, among various kinds of performances, being particularly certain about things that are amazing, close, and clearly visible, and so on. If many certainties have the causes mentioned above, then how does the order of arising occur? The cause of certainty that is closest arises first, and similarly, the result of the causes that are strongest at that time arises earlier. For example, when a person is both a father and a Khenpo, the same person is both the one who gives birth and the one who teaches reading.
