Some say: sound is permanent, because it is either a proponent or an opponent of establishing permanence. Regarding this, even if sound is the subject (or the dharma one wants to understand) of permanence, that alone cannot establish the meaning. Even if sound is set as a proponent of establishing space as permanent, it is only a nominal setting and cannot establish the actual meaning. Etc., all those that rely solely on one's own wishes without any basis for establishment, such as "because I admit it" and "because it is stated in the scriptures," etc., should be included. If things could be established in this way by one's own fabrications, then sound would be impermanent, because it is either a proponent or an opponent, and if "it is stated in the scriptures," etc., is used as a reason, impermanence could also be established, and thus everything would be established. Third, understanding the disappearance of other related dharmas through the disappearance of related dharmas, in this case, if the pervasive dharma disappears, the pervaded dharma is also considered to disappear, just as when trees disappear, resin also disappears. Similarly, when the cause disappears, the effect also disappears, because without a cause, the effect cannot exist, so the cause is the pervader and the reason for the existence of the effect. So, when does it become a knower? If the disappearance of the pervaded itself is limited to certain times and places, or if the disappearance of the pervader is used as a reason, etc., and the relationship between the proponent and the established is completely limited in some way, then it can become a knower. For example, when there are no trees, all categories of trees disappear. If one thinks that because there are no trees, there is no resin, then the disappearance of the pervader is the knower of the absence of resin. If one thinks that cedar trees have disappeared, then it is the knower of the absence of cedar trees. This should be understood in this way. Resin refers to the resin of trees, which is said to be the name of agarwood. Second, the non-observation of the observable nature: For the non-existence of observable objects such as vases, if the non-existence of the means of observing it is stated as a reason, then this opponent is very foolish, even if the observable is not observed, the term non-existence is not used, just as the Samkhya school believes that the effect exists in the cause, it is to establish the term of certain non-existence. Because the object or meaning of the term is merely non-existence, which is well known between the black cow and the rope, it would be too extreme to establish it with a reason.

Alas! So, in any direction, if a pot is not seen, or there is no means of seeing a pot, then relying on that, the thought arises, "There is no pot here," which is the experience of self-cognizance, without needing to rely on a reason. However, for those whose minds are deluded by sectarian ideas, even if a visible object is not seen, they do not necessarily assume it does not exist, so some do not use this term, and this is to dispel their confusion. Therefore, when eye consciousness sees the shape of a pot, there is no need to ask or explain to others, "This pot's shape and color are like this," but one experiences it oneself, and the arising of such a thought is from the experience of self-cognizance. Experiencing the thought, "There is no cloth on the pot," is because one's own mind has never generated any thought about cloth on the pot, and this is the experience of self-cognizance, thereby experiencing that the object is non-existent. Therefore, regarding these meanings of existence and non-existence, no one can deny the experience that "the mind directly decides," because self-cognizance makes one aware of what thoughts have arisen or not arisen in one's own mind, just as one experiences whether deception, etc., exists or does not exist in one's own mind. Through such experience, all terms regarding the existence or non-existence of objects are used, just as it was said before, "For objects to be accepted or rejected, entering is its main cause." This point is important. Second, summarizing the meaning. The reason of non-apprehension, like these that are about to be explained, in all cases, has the result of certainly determining that the object to be negated does not exist, or is capable of proving non-existence. So, what is that? It is that the cause of the object being able to appear is not seen, or its own nature, or its pervader. These two are its nature, so not seeing it, or not appearing. Not seeing the result is the reason for obstructing the unobstructed ability of the cause, but in general, it is not necessarily just the cause, and the three just mentioned, without exception, will become negative reasons. Second, regarding the definite cognition that is not other than inference, refuting the object and the dispute about it. First, inferring from the reason that colors, etc., are impermanent, etc., the reason just mentioned, although inference can generally connect impermanence, etc., with its own real object, the self-character.
