It is absolutely unacceptable to exaggerate things that have no functional capacity. Second, regarding considering universals as objects to be expressed: It is unreasonable for universals to be the sole object of expression, and if it is reasonable, then categories, etc., would not appear. The first point is divided into: the main text and the refutation of it. First: The universalists say: The object expressed by sound is an independent universal, and because it is expressed by sound, it is also the object of universal consciousness. Such a substantial universal exists only as an object of sensory perception, so what is expressed by sound is real. If self-characterization is expressed, then the senses, etc., would become meaningless, and the past and future would not be expressed by sound, etc. They do not want to accept the above inferences. But this is not reasonable, because a universal that is separate from the manifest is inexpressible. Because an independent universal that has become a substance is not established as a basis, if the application of sound and concept is not reasonable without it, then the application of sound and concept will become completely impossible. Even when apprehending a universal, if one does not apprehend it together with its particularities, then since the basis of the particularities is not apprehended, it cannot be the universal itself. Even if we assume that an independent universal can be expressed, the universal that exists independently, separate from the manifest aspects of its own essence, is neither the same as the manifest aspects, nor does it become manifest by the manifest, because even if the manifest is seen, it does not help to see the independent universal. Furthermore, the manifest does not make it manifest, because there is no connection whatsoever with "this is its universal." How, then, does the connection between different things arise? Is it dependent on arising, or dependent on cognition? Dependence on arising is like the arising of a sprout being dependent on seeds, etc., so there is a cause-and-effect relationship between them. However, the permanent universal is neither the result of the manifest, nor is it the cause of the manifest. Dependence on cognition is like understanding something as short in relation to something long, which is understood through dependence and imputation. However, the universal exists as a thing independently of the manifest. Therefore, the manifest is not the cause that produces the universal, so it is not dependent on arising, nor does it arise from it. And, since it is a different thing like a pillar and a vase, the manifest is not the establishment of that universal.

Therefore, if it is not an illusion, nor is it realized by other powers, nor is it established by dependence, then there is no connection whatsoever. How can it be universally illuminated by clarity? Just as the clarity of a cow cannot illuminate a pillar that is unrelated to it. Since there is no need to rely on clarity, its nature is always the object of perception. How can it generate the meaning of one's own mind? Because it always exists. Secondly, if it is said that among all clarities, the general characteristic is independent, and its nature is also revealed in the direct perception mind, then there is no fault of being constantly the object of perception. If this general characteristic can generate the consciousness that perceives it, then the one that can generate the consciousness of its own nature should also always have this power and should not depend on clarity. If it does not have the ability to generate its own mind at a certain time when there is no clarity, then this general characteristic, whether there is clarity or not, should also not have the ability to generate self-grasping consciousness at all times. The reason is that whether the general characteristic can generate its own mind or not is determined by its own nature. Since it is constant, it cannot be changed by conditions. Therefore, it is impossible to apply the power of favorable or unfavorable conditions to eliminate its inability or ability. Secondly, there is the fault of not appearing with characteristics. The consciousness of the general characteristic and the aspects of color and shape, etc., which are inherently related to it, such as blue, are undeniably certain. However, what generates this in the realm of consciousness that holds the general characteristic? Since it has been admitted that the consciousness of the general characteristic holds the independent general characteristic, and it is believed that the general characteristic is only a constant entity without shape, color, etc., then they should not appear. If so, when holding the general characteristic of a vase, the appearance of color and bulging belly, etc., should not appear. Since the general characteristic does not have those characteristics, like an arrow without feathers, who generates them? If it is said that it is generated by the clarity of the vase, but the one who holds the independent general characteristic has never held the clarity of the vase, so its characteristics cannot appear in it, just as the characteristics of the vase do not appear in the realm of consciousness of the one who holds the pillar. Therefore, the entity of sound.
