Even if one admits that consciousness itself has aspects of subject and object, the appearing object is a non-associated compositional factor called "name" and "sign." If one considers it to be a real entity that is distinct from consciousness, then there is no valid cognition to prove that it is distinct. This is because the claim that when the object disappears, the apprehension of it also disappears is not established. For example, when an object like a pillar disappears, the direct consciousness that apprehends the pillar disappears, so the pillar is proven to be the cause that generates the consciousness that apprehends it. However, when the appearing object of a general concept is nowhere to be found, the disappearance of its consciousness is never observed. If it is said that when it is observed to disappear, it exists, then since there is no direction or time in which it cannot be observed, it will be observed to be non-disappearing everywhere, just as a vase is observed in a place where a vase exists. If it is said that it will not be observed at all times because one is not paying attention, then for something that is very close to being an object, it is impossible for appearances to occur in a sequential order, just as when seeing a mottled object, everything must be observed simultaneously. Therefore, general concepts follow the disappearance or non-disappearance of symbols and effort, but do not follow the disappearance or non-disappearance of the object. Symbols and effort are internal components, and even if they exist, if there is no object of name and sign, consciousness will not arise. For example, in a direction empty of a vase, even if one intentionally focuses on the vase, direct perception of apprehending the vase will not arise. Similarly, if the real entity of things like names disappears, even if the internal components are complete, if it can be established that that consciousness disappears, then it itself will be established as the apprehended object of that consciousness, but such a thing is impossible. Second, refuting the view that all consciousnesses have objects, and explaining how conceptual thought with objects is refuted. First, the statement that the apprehended object, i.e., the other real entity of things like names, even if it disappears or does not exist, one does not see that consciousness disappear, is not established. This is because if no object appears in consciousness, then it can be said that there is no object. However, once it appears, all consciousnesses have apprehended objects, so it is only established that there is an object. Therefore, a consciousness without an object that is distinct from consciousness will never be established, so the statement that consciousness does not depend on an object, but merely arises in the form of an object from internal components alone, is not established. This statement is unreasonable, because dreams and the appearance of hair-nets, etc., are not things that have apprehended objects distinct from consciousness, but are seen as merely consciousness without apprehended objects.

If it is understood in this way, it cannot be established as an object of apprehension that is different from oneself. If it is thought that the consciousness of dreams, etc., is not without an object of apprehension that is different from consciousness, but rather that it has become a substance of non-associated formations, then that is the object of apprehension of that consciousness, then the consciousness of dreams, etc., is not produced from non-associated formations either, because there is no appearance of form in non-associated formations, but in the object of consciousness of dreams, etc., there is an appearance of aspects of color and shape such as blue, etc. If it is thought that such an appearance is a form included in the sphere of dharmas, then from the point of view of the object of appearance appearing as form, there is no dispute in establishing it as such, but to say that it is a form different from consciousness is slightly unreasonable, because even if a person sleeping in a small room dreams that all directions of space are filled with elephants, this does not prevent other forms from entering, therefore, such appearances are mutually unobstructed, so they are not the self-character of form, such as blue, etc., because it is impossible for the self-character of form to be unobstructed. Therefore, it is not the case that an elephant actually came there, nor that consciousness went out from the body, for if that were the case, it would follow that one would die because consciousness left the body. It is impossible to see other places unobstructed by the power of sleep, because if that were the case, others should also be able to see that suitable place. Consciousness does not remain partly in the body and partly go out, because that would result in two streams of consciousness. Therefore, apart from the appearance of the mind, no other object appears in the mind. Furthermore, if it is a real thing that can generate self-cognizing consciousness, then whoever focuses on any blue, etc., as the object of focus, others who are in a suitable place should also be able to cognize it like the former, but those people cannot cognize it, because only the person in whom such an aspect appears can cognize it, so the appearance is only an appearance in one's own consciousness, and apart from that, there is no other object of apprehension that generates that consciousness. That reasoning also explains that it is unreasonable to think that names, concepts, etc., exist in an object that is different from consciousness. Second, when asked what reason there is for thinking that the consciousness of the eye, ear, etc., is not mistaken about the object of apprehension and that it itself possesses the object of apprehension, the opponents reply: If that is the object of apprehension
