The reason is that the sign, as the cause of establishment, is the reason for not being mistaken about the dharma to be proven. Like the law of destruction as the dharma to be proven, it pervades the nature of arising as the cause of reason, because this is what is to be explained, so the relationship between the sign and the dharma, or the pervasiveness, or the following and the reverse, those are also clearly explained from the scriptures themselves, therefore, to say that the valid means different from the meaning of the scriptures is self-made, that is nothing. Because all the Buddha's words are very reasonable and are valid means, so the principle of valid means is only accomplished from that, so do not think of it as other. In the verses of the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is accomplished in the commentary on the second chapter called "Accomplishment of Valid Cognition." Now is the second direct perception. Explain the tool of measurement itself. Explain the result of the valid means. First, refute the wrong conceptions of number and scope. Explain the nature of direct perception itself. First, establish that valid means must be two. Refute the view that it is not certain to be two. First, the object to be measured by valid means must be two. Establish that the ultimate scope is one. First, show the reason for determining it to be two. Establish the homogeneity of the thesis. First, in general, starting from refuting the wrong conceptions about the number, scope, characteristics, and results of valid means, here, the true nature of valid means is shown. First, the wrong conceptions about number and scope are: the Lokayata believes that valid means is only direct perception; the Samkhya believes that direct perception, inference, and scripture are three valid means; the Naiyayikas believe that those three valid means plus analogy are four valid means; the Vaisheshikas believe that those four valid means plus implication and non-existence are six valid means. The Charvaka believes that there are reason and non-observation and existence and named famous and thinking and so on, and there are other valid means. The self-system believes that since the object to be measured is the manifest object and the non-manifest object, these two are certain, therefore, the valid means to measure them is also determined to be only direct perception and inference. Direct perception measures by seeing the self-characteristic of the object, while the hidden object measures by grasping its common characteristic, and there is no other way. Moreover, if it has the power of inference, it can not deceive as it measures, otherwise there is no reason not to deceive, so it is certain that there are only these two.

So. Second, regarding establishing the sign of being certain as two objects of measurement, there are the explanation of the fundamental reasoning and the explanation of other reasonings. First, others say, "The object of measurement is only the self-characterized, because it is only the object of a person's entering and withdrawing, so the object of measurement is not certain as two." If so, that the object of entering is self-characterized will also be explained below. Just by that, it is not refuted that the actual object of measurement of the two valid cognitions in the present situation is certain as two, because the existence of two objects of measurement is established by the power of reality. How is it that the appearing object of the two valid cognitions is capable and incapable of performing a function, and since these two are mutually exclusive, they cannot be one. If so, then hair and double moons, etc., also appear clearly as manifest, so there would be the fault of being a self-characterized entity capable of performing a function. Hair, etc., are not self-characterized entities, because there is only a clear appearance of their absence, and there is no belief or desire that they are actual self-characterized entities. If it is asserted that hair, etc., are established in reality, then they would not be illusions either. Second, furthermore, there is a difference between the objects of actual measurement, because from the point of view of the nature of the object itself, the general characteristic appears as similar and common in the way that the object, time, and aspect are mixed; the self-characterized is that which does not follow each other, is dissimilar, and is not common. Also, from the point of view of the subject, the general characteristic is the actual object of thought and sound; the self-characterized is not their object. Also, from the point of view of the cause, when other causes besides the apprehended object, such as conventions and attention, etc., are merely present, then there is the mind that grasps the general characteristic; even if conventions, etc., are present, if there is no self-characterized apprehended object, then there is no mind that grasps the self-characterized. Therefore, it is through these different aspects that the sign or reason for establishing the object of measurement as two is established. Third, explain the two objects of measurement that are distinct, and show the differences between the two that are not the same. First, state the definitions of the two objects of measurement, and refute the objections to them. First, if it is thought that the signs that establish the object of measurement as two are not established, then in order to establish its property, first identify what the two actual objects of measurement are as the subject, and then explain that it is capable and not
