Explanation of the meaning of meditating on suffering: Well, didn't your Bhagavan also say that all of samsara should be meditated upon as suffering, like a pit of fire and a Rakshasa continent? If meditating on suffering is not beneficial for liberation, how can it be explained? Meditating on suffering is not without benefit for liberation, but liberation cannot be attained by meditating on suffering alone, because liberation depends on realizing selflessness. Therefore, it is not only the suffering of suffering and the suffering of change that are spoken of as causes of temporary aversion, but with the pervasive suffering of conditioning in mind, it is said that all of samsara should be meditated upon as being of the nature of suffering. What we mean by the suffering of conditioning is this: the momentary aggregates that arise from the causes of karma and affliction, which are other-dependent, become the basis for future lives. Such a momentary conditioned aggregate is the basis for the view of selflessness. If one realizes that this momentary phenomenon is merely a condition, one can realize that there is no self-nature called "self" other than what is imputed as self. In this way, all attachment to grasping at self and what belongs to self is exhausted, and liberation is attained. Therefore, liberation comes from seeing selflessness, from the view of emptiness, and nothing else can do it. Other meditations, such as impermanence and suffering, and the other aspects of the four truths, are directed towards its meaning in the way that they are the means or meaning of realizing it, or as its function or result, so that alone is the most important. Therefore, it is said that from impermanence one knows the nature of suffering, and from such suffering one necessarily realizes selflessness. As it says in the sutra: Monks, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable ones, it is impermanent. Is that which is impermanent suffering or happiness? Venerable ones, it is suffering, for that which is impermanent is suffering, it is of the nature of change. Is it appropriate to regard that which is impermanent and suffering, which is of the nature of change, as "This is mine, this is me, this is my self"? Venerable ones, it is not. So it is said. Third, conclusion. Regarding self...
