If one cannot find something particularly good, then without thinking or being unable to think properly, even if there is fault, because of attachment to self, sometimes one pursues or accepts things related to self as if finding the source of one's happiness. It's like eating even poisonous food when extremely hungry; knowing one is sick, but drinking cool water when overwhelmed by thirst; when good women cannot be found, one seeks bad women; and if even bad women cannot be found, it's like seeing people engaging in sexual acts with animals. Therefore, from the aspect of being a reliance for one's own happiness, those with self-grasping will never be separated from attachment to what is 'mine.' Secondly, it is not appropriate to abandon the cause of attachment, and the inference that there is no fault in attachment. First, I will not abandon the cause of attachment, which is self. Therefore, understanding suffering is meaningless. First, if one refutes and fails to abandon the cause of attachment—selflessness—then one will also not abandon the attachment to the object, because the object is a faultless object. If there is attachment in this way, then because one is obscured by it, even if one sees what has become the source of suffering as merely suffering, one cannot do so, and even if one sees it, one cannot abandon it, the reason being: those who claim to have a self will never abandon what they consider to be the self, the basis for experiencing bondage and liberation, etc. No matter how accustomed one is to suffering, etc., how could one want to destroy the object of one's clinging—the self? They only want not to destroy it. Therefore, if at the time of liberation, the self exists as before, then how could attachment to self disappear at that time? If attachment to self exists, how could one abandon what is related to self? It should not be abandoned. If one thinks that the self at the time of liberation is contrary to being the basis for experiencing pleasure and pain, etc., and for names such as permanent and impermanent, and for all qualities such as wisdom and liberation, then how do you think that is the self that gives rise to your clinging? That is impossible, because the nature or desire of clinging cannot be abandoned, and such a self is not like that, because they think that it is the enjoyer of the bliss of liberation, the object to which names such as permanent and solitary apply, and possesses qualities such as non-returning to samsara, so if there is none of the experiencing, etc., then the self in desire

The meaning of practice will be completely lost. Therefore, if there is no certainty of experience, etc., then just like the son of a barren woman, there is no difference in meaning from non-existence, and therefore it will become selflessness. So, just as one cannot burn without lighting a fire, one cannot abandon self-grasping without abandoning self. Because, in any case, grasping at the self that has an object is, during the time that oneself exists, making attachment to that self more firm, and not separating it. Therefore, grasping at self is itself self-grasping, and it is not different like grasping at a woman and attachment to a woman. If one does not leave grasping at self, then how can self-grasping be easily separated? Such self-grasping is a powerful seed of clinging to what is mine. As long as there is self-grasping, it is impossible to abandon the complete clinging to the accomplishment of self-happiness. Therefore, such self-grasping, even when one wants liberation, exists as before, without diminishing in the slightest. Therefore, no matter how much one strives to contemplate what is mine as suffering, one still enters into or accepts it based solely on seeing that what is mine has the qualities that bring happiness, and therefore what is mine is itself an obstacle to being separated from attachment. Because of clinging to qualities, one cannot see its faults, and thus it is obscured, just as someone who indulges in the pleasure of sex does not see the woman's body as impure. If it is said that at the time of liberation, not only is there no attachment to what is mine, but even to the self, then according to this view, the self that now wants to be the one who abandons attachment will also cease to exist. What is the reason? Because the yogi who abandons attachment is the one who abandons the self, and the self is what is abandoned by him, like a garbage heap, so what is called self is not the one who abandons attachment. If that is the case, then how does the yoga of abandoning attachment abandon the self? Therefore, his contemplation of suffering is also meaningless. According to you, all contemplation of the path of abandoning attachment is for the sake of purifying the self, and if there is no self, one should not strive on the path, this is a criticism of Buddhists.
