If faults arise from focusing on the object, then both the object and the subject are the basis of faults. If it does not become an object of consciousness, then the object will not produce faults. Since it is impossible for the subject alone to exist apart from the object, then there will be no faults in that either. Thus, since both the object and the subject are without fault, therefore it is not possible to be free from attachment to both of them. Second, merely knowing suffering is not freedom from attachment. Explaining the meaning of saying to meditate on suffering. First, merely knowing suffering is not abandoned. It does not abandon the thought of 'mine'. First, if, like a finger or other limb bitten by a poisonous snake, even though it is one's own limb, it is cut off before the poison spreads, in the same way, by meditating on all attachments to self and what belongs to self as being of the nature of suffering, will attachment to it be abandoned? It is not merely knowing it as suffering that can do this, but because the hope of benefit to oneself has been exhausted and there is fear of harm, thus destroying the thought of 'mine', one is able to abandon the defective things like fingers. Conversely, if the thought of 'mine' has not been destroyed, even if one knows it to be suffering, it will not be abandoned. For example, the senses such as the eyes and the hair are regarded as the basis for achieving one's own happiness, so what will prevent the thought of 'mine'? It cannot be prevented, therefore, for self and what belongs to self, what is the reason for being free from attachment? It is impossible to have. For example, with regard to hair and teeth that have fallen from the body, a mind of disgust and non-attachment will arise. On the other hand, attachment will arise with regard to hair, nails, etc. that are connected to the body, which is obvious to everyone. Therefore, due to the power of attachment to self, the thought of 'mine' naturally arises for what belongs to my lineage, and even if one knows it to be suffering, one will not be free from attachment. It is impossible to be unrelated to self. Because, the Vaisheshikas and others believe that consciousness and limbs are related to self through aggregation and possession. And even when seeing that the connection that gives rise to the thought of 'mine' is suffering, it still remains in the same state as before and does not lose its connection, therefore, even if one ultimately sees it as suffering, for one's own

Attachment will not be abandoned. In this regard, the Vaiśeṣika school believes that happiness and other qualities of the self are related by the aggregation that is suitable for the self; the body and senses are related by the aggregation that is related to or has become possessed, and they are interconnected. If the Sāṃkhya school and others believe that the mere connection does not give rise to the thought of self, but rather clings like the inner puruṣa (Sanskrit: पुरुष, IAST: puruṣa, Chinese: spirit) is mixed with the object, thinking "happiness is mine," if one recognizes that puruṣa and the object are different, the thought of self will not arise. If, as they say, merely recognizing that the self and the dharma are different does not give rise to the thought of self, but rather arises because the self is regarded as a part of happiness. Therefore, even if there is no connection such as aggregation, as long as there is attachment to the self, whatever is regarded as beneficial to the self is something that everyone has, so if one does not abandon self-attachment, one cannot abandon the thought of self. Second, even if one meditates on suffering, one cannot abandon the thought of self with it, which is explained as follows: either it is not suffering at all, or even if it is suffering, it cannot be seen, and even if it is seen, one cannot abandon the thought of self. First, if one regards what is clung to as the cause of suffering, like a finger bitten by a snake, and meditates on suffering, then when one is accustomed to it, the thought of self will not arise even for the senses, etc., if one thinks so. Then, it is absolutely certain that those things of the self do not cause suffering to the self, but are beneficial to the self, so one will also accept it. If those things of the self may produce a little happiness, but are not the means of liberation, and mostly like food mixed with poison, will eventually produce suffering, so one will regard everything as suffering, if one thinks so. Then, the practitioner of suffering who has not abandoned self-attachment, because of attachment to the excellent and faultless happiness that is beneficial to the self, even if one temporarily abandons the inferior self that is contrary to the excellent happiness, it cannot be called abandoning attachment, because one is attached to the excellent happiness, so one will completely abandon the happiness that is inferior to it, just as a person who gets good food will abandon bad food, but this does not mean that one will never be attached to food. If the happiness of the self
