Refutation. First, explaining the entity and its manner. First, if it is said that liberation can also be attained by meditating on self, then what is the use of meditating on non-self? Similarly, why are there no other paths to liberation such as meditating on suffering and practicing asceticism? If you think like that, it is impossible to have another path to liberation while holding onto the belief in self, except for meditating on non-self. Because, a fool who sees self as existent with a perverted mind will always cling to the object of self, saying "This is me," and because of clinging, wanting that self to encounter happiness, desire will arise for the object, and because of desire, the faults of self and what belongs to self will be obscured, not seeing them as faults but seeing them as virtues, and thus intense desire will arise. "Mine," taking everything that is the means or method for the happiness of that self, therefore, as long as there is attachment manifest to self, that person will wander in existence. If there is a perception of self, then there will be a perception of other in relation to something. From grasping the aspect of self and other, attachment arises, completely grasping one's own side, and hatred arises towards the other side, and being completely connected with these attachment and hatred, all faults such as pride and jealousy will arise. Second, detachment from clinging is not possible only to the self. Even if it exists, the liberated self becomes meaningless. Therefore, it is advised to abandon self-grasping. First, brief statement, detailed explanation, conclusion, the first of the three. If the yogis who are detached from clinging are liberated only by clinging to the self, without any clinging to all the objects that are grasped as belonging to the self, that is impossible. Because, attachment to self is necessarily inseparable from attachment to what belongs to self. Those who claim that self exists cling to the self as being without fault, therefore, for them, there is no cause for detachment from attachment to self, because there is no way to detach from attachment to self until the view of self-existence is abandoned. Second, refutation of abandoning attachment by seeing faults. Refutation of abandoning attachment by meditating on suffering. First, merely seeing faults cannot abandon. It would also be without fault. First, if the self is faultless, but attachment to it is faulty, if you say so, what will happen from knowing that it is faulty? When asked,

If one thinks that one can abandon self-grasping by recognizing its faults, it is not so. For unless the object of self-grasping, the 'self' itself, is refuted, one cannot abandon the grasping that takes the 'self' as its object. The reason is that abandoning attachment, hatred, miserliness, jealousy, etc., which are related to whatever object has qualities or faults, is due to not seeing those qualities or faults in the object. It is not possible to abandon the engagement of the inner mind by any external means, like extracting a thorn. Furthermore, object-grasping is not generated strongly because one knows that the grasping itself has qualities, but because one sees the qualities of the object of grasping, the mind of grasping inevitably arises. For example, even if one knows that alcohol does not have qualities, one still develops attachment to alcohol because one sees the taste of alcohol, etc., as qualities. Therefore, if the cause of the arising of self-grasping is not lacking, and the 'self' itself remains the cause of generating that grasping, then what can prevent the object-oriented mind that arises from that cause? It is impossible to prevent it. Therefore, although attachment, etc., do not necessarily arise merely because objects such as women exist in the visible realm, just as the thought of seeing them arises, merely because the 'self' exists, there will be grasping onto it, and once there is grasping onto it, it is impossible not to develop the thought 'mine'. Secondly, if one asks, 'What faults of self-grasping are seen that lead to its abandonment?' If one says, 'Because self-grasping is the basis of all suffering, it is faulty,' even so, one cannot separate from and abandon this self-grasping because one is attached to it, seeing it as 'mine,' that is, as the object of the existing 'self.' For example, just as one cannot abandon the 'self.' If self-grasping did not exist, then the 'self' existing alone would not be the cause of suffering. If one says that self-grasping is the same, that is, you do not accept that self-grasping existing alone without a 'self' is also the cause of suffering. Since in your view, it is impossible for the 'self' not to exist, do you not accept that suffering arises solely from self-grasping without a 'self'? Or, according to your view, if there is no 'self,' even if there is self-grasping, there is no one to experience suffering, so self-grasping existing alone would not be the basis of suffering? Or, I...
