It should be known that things that exist there will never exceed the state of interdependence that cannot be known otherwise. Second, refuting the argument: Grammarians say that smoke is not necessarily not produced without fire, because smoke can also be seen to arise from the anthill known as the crown of Indra. If the crown of Indra, that is, the anthill, actually has the nature of fire that can produce smoke, then it itself is the real fire, so the real fire as the cause and the real smoke as the result arising from it are exhausted. However, if it is not the nature of fire, then how can smoke, which has become the fruit of fire, arise from it? It is established that the fruit of fire is not smoke merely through the reversal of fire, and no other investigation is needed. Moreover, the fire that exists in the nature or kind of the cause of smoke has a special ability or difference to produce that smoke. If there is no such fire that can produce smoke, and the resulting smoke arises from the crown of Indra, etc., which is not the self-cause of smoke, then the smoke becomes causeless, and if so, it becomes non-occasional, as just said. Therefore, in these dharmas, whatever cause exists, there is a consequent arising of the result, and when the cause disappears, the result also disappears. Seeing what result follows what cause, then the nature of that result must depend on its own cause of birth, therefore, it will never arise from a non-cause or another cause of a different kind, that is, it is impossible to arise. This verse is a verse summarizing the intermediate paragraphs. If one wants to know how to see what follows what, then, assuming that non-observation is the premise, first, neither fire nor smoke is observed on a visible basis. Then fire is observed. Then the observation that smoke arises from it, these three stages can determine the cause and effect relationship. First, since it is not observed, the three possibilities of smoke existing before fire, coming from elsewhere, and arising from other causes are excluded. If any of these three cases were true, it should be able to appear even if fire is not observed. Then, by observing the cause and effect relationship through two manifestations, the doubts that smoke has never arisen and that it has not arisen from fire are eliminated, thus concluding that "without it, there is no arising."

It is certain that this is its result. If so, on a basis devoid of horses and donkeys, if first a horse is identified and then a donkey is identified, will that also become a cause and effect relationship? For these, there is no reason to eliminate the five doubts of coming from other places, etc. If a sequential relationship like smoke and fire is seen in horses and donkeys, it may become a cause and effect relationship, but that is impossible. Or, first, the cause and effect relationship of smoke and fire is identified in advance. When the cause ceases, the result will also necessarily cease because it has not been identified. In any case, all things that are determined to be cause and effect are determined by seeing things follow each other without confusion in reality. If someone asks, how can seeing smoke arise from fire only once prove that all such things are cause and effect? It can be proven, because it is impossible for smoke to arise even once from a cause that is not its own, just as it is impossible to see smoke arise even once from water. Therefore, any object that depends on a collection of causes, when those causes are assembled, cannot but arise, and when they are not assembled, it is impossible to arise, this is the nature of all objects. It can never be transcended, like the heat of fire. Therefore, the arising of bamboo from sheep's horns, etc., all such similar things should not be called arising from other non-causes, because it is impossible for them to arise from non-causes. So, what is it? It is merely the power of dependent origination that relies on their own causes to produce results like themselves, and do not mistakenly think that this is a result obtained from other causes. Because their causes are different, and they arise from different causes, the results are also different. However, because the shapes and other parts are similar, they are confused with each other, and the unwise think that they arise from non-causes, just as seeing two people who look alike, one thinks that one is not the son of the other's mother, but is born from the other mother. Second, showing that the sign of self-nature is not confused from the connection of one self, establishing the connection of signs without difference, even though there is no difference, it is suitable as a sign, showing the difference of combination by examples. First, not only the result can be a sign, but the sign of self-nature also has a connection that will not arise without it, therefore it is a correct sign.
