Therefore. If so, the basis or cause of the arising of suffering is bondage, but for permanence, from what reason does the cause of bondage exist? If it does not exist, the cause or basis of the non-arising of suffering is liberation, but for permanence, from what reason does the cause of non-arising exist? It is impossible for it to exist. Therefore, how can it be the basis of bondage and liberation? It cannot be the basis. Second, the Sthavira school says: As the basis of bondage and liberation and the cause and effect of karma, the self must exist, and that is neither permanent nor impermanent. Whatever cannot be said to be impermanent is not the cause of anything, because the cause of arising is pervaded by momentariness. Therefore, if it is not impermanent, then how can it be the agent and the experiencer, the basis of bondage and liberation? It does not act as their basis at all. If you think that even if it is not impermanent, it is not permanent either, so there are no two faults, then, for something that cannot be expressed in any way, the so-called bondage and liberation also do not exist in any way, it is only a verbal expression, but in reality there is not even a particle of something that has become the basis of bondage and liberation. Because contradictory things have never been established to exist on one entity, so like the son of a barren woman, such a self as an agent is impossible. They say: If there is no that, the agent and the experiencer cannot become one, so the results of karma will be wasted, and the states of bondage and liberation are different, so striving on the path is meaningless. If the agent is the inexpressible self, and that is the experiencer of the fruit, and that which is bound is the liberator, then the former must necessarily become permanent. Since the nature of any dharma does not change from its previous nature, therefore that which does not perish is called permanence by the wise who understand reason, and other than that, there is no basis for applying the name of permanence. Therefore, abandon this shameless view of gathering contradictions on one entity, and simply say that the self is permanent, that is better than the previous admission. Therefore, what is the use of clinging to words like a child's play? Even if you say that, in reality there cannot be such a self as the basis of bondage and liberation. Or, it must be admitted that it is definitely the cause of the agent.

Then it will become impermanent. If so, whatever has a destructive nature, the wise call it impermanent. Therefore, abandon this shameful view and say that it is impermanent. Reciting it in this way completes it. Like this, just by explaining cessation, other aspects such as peace can also be understood. Fourth, regarding the path. Is selflessness the path to permanent liberation? Other than that, there is no other path like that. First, regarding things and the refutation of them. First, it has been said that the path of contemplating selflessness, from the culmination of habituation, the mind no longer has self-grasping, etc., and one obtains the transformation of abiding in the nature of being without even the slightest fault. Second, regarding the equality of the power of the antidote and what is to be abandoned, and that all afflictions cannot be completely exhausted, and that it is impossible for afflictions to be exhausted forever, and that even if they are exhausted, they will recur and need to be abandoned. First, Two types: brief indication and extensive explanation. First, even if the mindstream has attained a state of transformation free from all defilements, just as a faultless path arises in a previously untransformed, faulty mind, it is possible that faults may arise again, so liberation is not permanent. It is not like that, because the faulty mind has the power to harm the path, but the path does not have the power to harm the faulty mind, so the path reaches its culmination, and it is impossible for faults to arise in the transformed continuum. Second, without effort, there is no turning back; even with effort, there is no turning back. First, when it has manifested, there is no permanent power; even when it has not manifested, there is no turning back. First, when the selfless mind has reached its culmination and manifested, what is the reason why it does not turn back again? Because consciousness is of the nature of knowing and clarity, and it is of the nature or characteristic of grasping objects. Moreover, it grasps the object as it is, and the object also has the nature of existing as it is, therefore it is also the cause of arising the object-possessing consciousness, because it is the self-characteristic of the non-deceptive appearance. The nature or state of the object and the object-possessor is like this, which is due to the power of things themselves, so no one can reverse it. Even if the nature is like that, due to other causes of confusion, the mind will not conform to the state of things
