If someone asks, since attachment also arises, then wouldn't compassion without attachment also be without fault? It is not like that. Because for the forms of suffering such as impermanence, there is no hindrance at all to enter, so compassion is the nature of the object of mind that naturally enters following its own previous actions, and the love that arises is not clinging to sentient beings, life, and persons, nor is it increasing with it, even if the essence of self and person is not established, it is only on the momentary continuum of conditioned phenomena that is labeled as sentient beings, and even wanting to eliminate their suffering, it will naturally arise in the mind. So, what is the difference between compassion that clings to sentient beings and compassion that is based on the Dharma? Just as what is grasped is not its own nature, for the Dharma that is not established like what is grasped, attachment arises from binding to self and other. Without binding to self and other, just knowing that the nature of momentary conditioned phenomena is the basis of suffering, just knowing the continuum of the aggregates and conditions, in this way, compassion without attachment will arise. Similarly, the unconditioned compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas should also be understood. Ignorance is the root of faults such as greed, and that is also clinging to the existence of sentient beings or persons or self, because there is no view of self, therefore hatred will not arise from the cause of the fault of harming oneself or sentient beings, therefore it is believed that compassion without attachment has no fault of the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion. Third, if one abides in samsara because of love or karma, then because one is under the control of karma or abides in samsara itself, one will not be able to be liberated from samsara. If that is the case, will one be tainted by the faults of samsara? It is not that there is no liberation from samsara, because the remaining aggregates of the Arhats who abide by karma, when the previous conditioned phenomena of abiding in this life are exhausted, they will not continue again in other existences, and if the power of the conditioned phenomena of love or karma is not exhausted, then even if they abide in samsara, like a lotus arising from mud, there is no fault of samsara, because neither arising nor suffering can torment them. If that is the case, Arhats also reincarnate

If (Bodhisattvas) become weary, how long will they remain in samsara? The Hearers and Solitary Realizers' detachment is due to their lesser compassion, so they do not have great effort to remain in samsara for a long time. However, the Buddhas and the Sons of the Buddhas, who naturally possess great love that does not abandon limitless sentient beings, and who are sustained by skillful means, having thoroughly trained in the immeasurable accumulations of merit and wisdom and aspirations, etc., therefore, as long as the inexhaustible cause is not exhausted, they will remain in samsara for the sake of other sentient beings until the end of samsara. The second part is: Briefly indicating and elaborately explaining. The first point is: If, because of abandoning the cause of samsara—the view of the aggregates as a real self—one attains the stream-enterer fruit on the path of seeing, will there be no more samsara on the first supramundane path? Answer: Although he has abandoned all imputed self-grasping, because he has not abandoned the innate self-grasping, he will still be reborn elsewhere. When the innate self-grasping is abandoned, how can there be samsara? There will be no more samsara. The second part is: Revealing the nature of innate self-view, and how there will be no samsara without it. The first point is: What is innate self-view? When the desire to be happy or not to be miserable arises, based on these two, the thought of "I am" naturally arises. This innate view that sees "I" or "sentient being" or "having a self" is called innate self-view. The second point is: When one becomes accustomed to seeing the meaning of no-self, this kind of innate self-grasping will also disappear. At that time, because there is no appearance of "I," no one will cling to "I am," and without craving for "I," there will also be no manifestation of running in samsara because of wanting "I" to encounter happiness. The second part, thinking that having a "self" makes bondage and liberation unreasonable. For a permanent self, there is no bondage and liberation. For an inexpressible self, there is also no bondage and liberation. The first point is: If the permanent self, which is the basis of bondage and liberation, does not exist, then since there is no one being bound, there is no one suffering; since there is no one suffering, then who will experience the sublime happiness of liberation later? It is like there being no Lhas Byin, so there is no imprisonment and no liberation from shackles. Therefore, it is only reasonable that there exists a "self" as the basis of bondage and liberation, is that so? Answer: Such a permanent self cannot be the basis of bondage and liberation, because neither bondage nor liberation can benefit or harm it.
