This is not something that happens naturally. If it were, then from when it arises, it could not increase from habitual causes, etc., because that would not be permissible. In this way, by establishing an argument that it is not natural, there is harm to the view that it is natural, because self-arising without a cause is contradictory. Either because it is without a cause, it never arises, or it is not occasional but always exists, because there is such a fault. Second, refute the argument for no samsara, establish the argument for samsara, and show the harm to no samsara. First, wind, etc., are not reasonable as the cause of afflictions. This also refutes the view that they are the cause of arising. First, brief explanation and detailed explanation. First, the Lokayata says, attachment, etc., do not arise from a beginningless similar lineage that has gone before, because they are the nature of the body's elements, wind, etc. If asked: How do ignorance and samsara arise from the wind element, anger and wisdom, etc., from bile, and desire, stinginess, love, etc., from phlegm? Answer: Because following and reversing are confused, attachment, etc., are not the nature of those faults of wind, etc., because merely the existence of those faults does not necessarily mean that attachment, etc., exist, and when those faults are reduced and reversed from before, attachment, etc., also cannot be reversed. Why? Because it is seen that some people have a lot of phlegm, but little desire and a lot of wisdom and anger, etc. Moreover, people with a lot of phlegm are fair-skinned, have large bodies, are sleepy, and have difficulty moving, etc. People with a lot of bile are yellow-skinned, have a bad body odor, and are hot, etc. People with a lot of wind are thin, dark-skinned, move lightly, and talk a lot, etc., as it is said. Second, refutation and how it does not conform to itself. First, there is the fault of mixing cause and effect, there is the fault of inverting cause and effect, there is the fault of determining the result as one. First, if you say that the three, wind, bile, and phlegm, exist in a mixed nature, so it is impossible to have a single person, so even people with a lot of phlegm can see other qualities, so there is no fault as just mentioned. If you see the quality of that cause, anger, etc., why don't you see that quality other than the previous bad smell and coarseness, etc.? Not seen

Then, how is it known that the cause of that (disease) is mainly bile? If you see the body becoming enlarged and conclude that this is the nature of phlegm, then the basis for determining that phlegm is dominant is only seeing its nature. Other things like bile are similar to this. Even if there is no basis for considering bile to be dominant in a case where phlegm is dominant, if bile also becomes dominant, then the characteristics of wind, bile, and phlegm, in terms of their relative dominance, will never be understood. If that is the case, then it will be impossible to establish their respective characteristics with certainty. If you say that the characteristics of wind, etc., are not determined separately as ignorance, etc., but that all three together cause all desires, etc., to arise, then it would follow that all beings should be equal in terms of desire, hatred, pride, wisdom, etc., without any difference in magnitude, because there is no difference in the causes that determine their distinctiveness, and all are equally endowed with all causes. Therefore, desire, etc., are not common characteristics of all three afflictions. If you say that there is no difference in the four elements as causes, but that there are various differences in the forms, smells, etc., that arise from them, then there is no fault. However, if forms, etc., also do not have previous actions as the main cause that makes them different, then it is unreasonable for there to be differences there, and this argument applies to you as well. This is because external forms, etc., have their own seeds and the actions of beings as contributing factors, which is why they are different. Moreover, the elements themselves also have variations in color, etc., increasing and decreasing. If the forms, etc., of internal beings are not due to differences in the causes of ripening results, but only due to the elements, then it would lead to a state of no difference. Both of these aspects should be understood. If you also consider desire, etc., to be the nature, that is, the characteristics of all three afflictions, then what is the problem? Because the causal body does not have the nature of lacking the capacity for desire, etc., therefore the results are not the same. What is the cause of this difference in the magnitude of desire, etc.? That's it. This single verse does not appear in the treatise; it is a statement from Ornament for Valid Cognition. Furthermore, if wind, bile, and phlegm are not diseases, and when they become diseases, there are differences in their relative dominance, but desire, etc., are considered to be their respective characteristics, then because there is no such difference, that is not its characteristic, but it is.
