Thus, merely achieving detachment is not enough to become omniscient. If it were like a Hearer or Solitary Realizer Arhat, merely realizing selflessness would not be sufficient to prove the existence of a valid person, a teacher, an omniscient one. If one thinks like this, then, for the path that can permanently pacify all the sufferings of samsara, which is established by the reasoning of true power, the stainless wisdom that enters into the various aspects of the path's stages or the various aspects of knowable things, and the aspects of skillful means such as meditative stabilization, are practiced for a long time, such as three great countless eons. For example, if one practices treatises on crafts and so on, one will gradually realize faults from gross to subtle. For a yogi who has extensively trained in wisdom with infinite skillful means, extremely subtle faults such as ignorance belonging to one's own mind-stream, and the qualities that are their remedies, will arise as extremely clear intelligence. Because those to-be-abandoned things are destroyed by the remedies themselves, their minds are clearer than others, and therefore they are extremely superior. When one is in the state of ultimate wisdom that is extremely clear, just as the orb of the sun cannot obtain darkness, the habitual tendencies of clinging to the cause of cyclic existence are also exhausted and abandoned in an extremely subtle way, and ultimate wisdom is attained. The difference between the Great Sage and the Rhinoceros-like Solitary Realizers who engage in benefiting others, and the Hearer Arhats, is that this person has abandoned all habitual tendencies. Therefore, the practice of skillful means is for the purpose of guiding sentient beings to the path, or for that purpose. Therefore, when the cause of the teacher, the practice of skillful means, is explained as proof here, it is intended to apply the name of the result to the cause and call it a teacher. Third, the conclusion: Then, the teacher Dignāga said, 'Exertion is a teacher because it guides beings.' Doesn't this mean that one is called a teacher when one truly teaches others the method of pacifying suffering? Why is it said here to be the cause of the teacher? There, in exertion and so on, it is not shown to be truly teaching, but it is thought that it will teach. That is also the practice of skillful means at the time of the cause.

Therefore, it is named by that name. The necessity of naming is to indicate the cause that can be shown to sentient beings with a special name. The way to know that it exists in this way is, from the nature that is established as a result or measure—the Sugata and the Protector—first, the two, the desire for benefit and the teacher, are said to be its cause or proof, because these two proofs must appear before these two proofs or results. These two, the desire for benefit and the teacher, are said to be the proof or cause of being born as a man of measure, so when it is established as a proof, it should be understood as the cause itself. Second, regarding the result, it is said that the perfection of self-benefit is the Sugata, and it is said that the perfection of other-benefit is the Protector. First, there are two types: brief explanation and detailed explanation. First, if one thinks about how it is established as a man of measure from those two proofs, then because he has the non-inverted view and abides in the unshakable state of the perfection of the two benefits, it is said that way. The perfection of self-benefit is because the cause of suffering is completely eliminated from the root, so it has the distinction of three qualities, which is called Sugata. If it is guided from the word Sugata (Sanskrit), it is the Sugata, the one who has gone well, the one who has gone without returning, and the one who has gone completely, so that name is said. Second, there are three: gone well, not returning, and completely gone. First, because it is never the basis of suffering such as birth, it is called gone or abandoned in a good, beautiful, or praiseworthy way. So, from where is this abandoned? From the selflessness that eliminates the root of all suffering, as determined by reason, seen in the path of seeing, or seen and familiarized in the path of meditation, or perfected spontaneously from practice. Thus, that which is not the basis of suffering is praiseworthy, and going there by the means established by reason is called gone, just as the body of a man is beautiful because it is not mixed with the faults of contamination. This distinguishes it from others, such as outsiders. Second, what is returning like? Why does not returning not return? Not being born again in samsara, and the causes of being born there—faults such as attachment—are not
