The loving Bodhisattva who abides in the temporary, in order to destroy the suffering of all other sentient beings, engages in, that is, undertakes, the methods of destroying suffering. How does one eliminate the suffering of others by manifesting the method oneself? First, if one does not know the cessation of suffering that arises from the method itself, and the nature of the path that is the cause of that cessation, then it is difficult to explain those causes and effects to others accurately and without error, because one is unable to. Second, when one who seeks the method in this way discerns the meaning of the authentic teachings that show the method in accordance with the power of reality, one realizes that suffering itself sometimes arises, and that there are differences such as increase and decrease, and that there is a cause for that suffering because of the reason for focusing on it. And because that cause is impermanent and so on, one also realizes the nature of the essence or characteristics of that cause through one's own discernment. If this suffering did not arise from a cause, then it would either always exist or never exist, and there could be no differences such as increase and decrease, but one would think that it has a cause. What is that cause like? Because a permanent thing does not produce a result with various temporary states, one would think that the cause must be of an impermanent nature. Such a cause is not a single common thing like time or power, but rather it abides in the differences of the individual minds of the various beings who experience different things, and one would think and contemplate that it is the previous one that continuously enters. In that continuous entry, the mind is the main thing, not something else, and because there is a conceptualization that grasps the mind as self, it accepts various objects and becomes an action, just as an iron needle moves from having a magnet, the characteristics of the cause can also be understood without error by the eye of wisdom accompanied by the light of the authentic teachings. Why does one who wants to destroy suffering diligently contemplate and discern only the cause of suffering in this way? If the cause remains unchanged, then the result

Because (the Buddha) did not see or did not see the complete cessation of suffering. In this way, knowing that that cause is also destructible, in order to destroy the cause of that suffering, one contemplates what is the opposite of that suffering, thereby observing the antidote. At that time, in order to understand the nature of the cause without confusion, i.e., to comprehend, the opposite of the cause will also necessarily be determined. So, if one understands the cause of all suffering, what is the cause and what is its antidote? The view of the perishable aggregate, headed by self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self, and the clinging or attachment of the mind that has the five aggregates produced by afflictions as its object, is the cause, and the antidote that harms it and uproots it is the wisdom that sees selflessness, because these two have contradictory objects and aspects, like light and darkness. So, what does one become attached to? It is to one's own aggregates. How so? Without distinguishing the continuum and aggregation of the five aggregates with wisdom, one clings to them as "I," and one clings to the dharmas belonging to that aggregate, such as "my eyes," as mine. Therefore, existence, which is encompassed by pleasure, pain, and indifference, is exhausted in just these five aggregates. Apart from clinging to them and abiding in existence, no other creator of samsara can be found, not even a particle. If it ceases, then the state of holding onto existence will also cease; if it does not cease, then no other cause can stop samsara, which is established by reason. One might ask: Didn't we say above that craving is also a cause? It has been said that although craving is the cause of taking birth, what will not arise without it is self-grasping, and if self-grasping does not cease, craving cannot be abandoned, and if it ceases, craving will not arise. Or, it is also explained that craving, which arises from attachment to the objects of conditioned phenomena due to grasping at self and what belongs to self, is also a cause. One might think: Can't self-grasping be abandoned? Its object can be harmed by correct reasoning. Because in the continuum and the objects of conditioned phenomena of many moments, there is only grasping at self, and self is not established, so just like grasping at a snake on a variegated rope, it is just the habit of inverted grasping, so it can be transformed.
