It is because it is not independent of causes and conditions. Therefore, if the mind cannot be distinguished in that way, it is impossible to cultivate both simultaneously. So, is what is called "mind" a single dharma? Is its nature neither existent nor nonexistent, but a third thing that exists independently without relying on the two? Or is it any one of existence or nonexistence, because it is impossible to distinguish a single basis, so it cannot be determined that this is it. If it is like the first case, both cannot appear from its own single nature, so there is no need for an investigation of existence or nonexistence, what is needed is a kind of knowledge. If it is like the latter case, it is necessary that it does not appear from either one. But this holds on to the part where both existence and nonexistence appear, so it cannot be determined by the mind that it is one. If it is one, then it should not be distinguished from the beginning. But here, existence and nonexistence are established as two different dharmas, which is reasonable. Therefore, no one would admit that existence and nonexistence are one. There is no essence that is the basis of being one. If it exists, then it is established as such. Therefore, non-difference and non-oneness are on an equal footing, not leaning towards any side. Neither of these two will become the ultimate meaning. So, what is meant by neither existent nor nonexistent? That is the meaning of not being any one side when measured from any side of existence or nonexistence, it is from the meaning of not being biased towards any side. But it does not mean that there is a basis that is neither existent nor nonexistent. If it exists, then it will become permanent. Therefore, no matter what, it cannot be established as existing. Similarly, it cannot be established as not existing. Therefore, Dzogchen is a symbol of the extremely profound heart essence, the oral instructions of the guru, the power of pristine awareness, and is only the realm of practice for a few fortunate ones. That which is inexpressible, the realization that abides in the actual meaning is extremely difficult. Therefore, most of the practitioners of today only speculate in their minds, and just because they cannot find anything to say, they think that there is a basis that is neither existent nor nonexistent, thereby planting the seeds of true existence. The intellect that speculates from every aspect, irrigating the fertilizer of clear emptiness, and striving for a long time to cultivate the poisonous tree of dualistic clinging, is a deviation from the path of clear light Dzogchen. Therefore, this which cannot be established as a nominal commitment, this clarity that cannot be grasped and speculated by the mind, is the nature of mind, samsara and nirvana.

The king's own nature is unfabricated, unadulterated, and unerring. Thus, clearing away the pitfalls of extremist views, the inexpressible wisdom is pointed out like a signpost. Ah Ho! Since there is no partiality of thought or expression whatsoever, nothing to meditate on is found. Not even a single thought arises like, "I will meditate on this and abide." One does not know how to meditate. Now, if such meditation is not understood by anyone, and is inconceivable like a rabbit's horn, what is the benefit of it? It is not like that. Here, if a lost object is lost without being found, then until that object is found, the matter is not accomplished. But this is not like that. If one sees that it has become a state where it is never possible to find, then that is directly seeing the way that the mind's own nature is. Why say it is not found? The Great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) said, "What is it called, not finding the mind itself?" Like that. Because it is far beyond the realm of terminology, if one distinguishes with terminology, even a particle of a findable object that can be established by terminology is not found. However, there is no need to be discouraged by not finding it. Because one knows the way the self-nature of the unfindable nature is, that finding is manifestly in one's own hand. Therefore, abide and rest in the inexpressible, unfindable nature, in that very self-existing state. That is to say, because nothing is found, if one says that because one cannot find a place to rest, one does not know how to rest, one does not need to presume to have found a support. What harm is there if there is no support? What harm is there if one does not know the limit of resting? Because its own nature has been like that from the beginning, one only needs to abide in that very state. Then, if one abides in that state, the way to meet the face of wisdom, the fruit that transcends the mind, is: there is not even a tiny particle of clinging to true existence. Even if there were, there is no object of focus like, "The way it exists is like this." The Great Orgyen said, "Looking, there is nothing to see, like the sky. Whether it is similar or dissimilar, look at your own mind." Like that. From the Wisdom That Is Difficult to Transcend: "Since all phenomena are naturally completely pure, one should thoroughly meditate on the thought of no thing." Like that. For this, until a definitive understanding of emptiness, clarity, transparency, and primordial purity arises, one is either a proponent of substantiality, or at best, one is only mind-only, merely self-knowing and self-illuminating, and cannot transcend that. Therefore, one must ascertain that there is no object of focus.
