The Quintessential Instructions of Buddha's Hand-Holding Mother. The Quintessential Instructions of Buddha's Hand-Holding Mother. Herein lies the Quintessential Instructions called Buddha's Hand-Holding Mother. To Manjushri, the embodiment of the wisdom of all victors, who dispels all darkness of deluded appearances from memory, the supreme deity who is the glory of the mind, I pay homage by knowing the ultimate true nature. Those who wish to cross the unbearable ocean of suffering in samsara should strive diligently and understand well the illusion of the deluded mind, and cut off its false core in the realm of dharma. Thus, the appearances of the six realms of beings pervaded by space, even the immeasurable appearances, are due to the power of karma, and thus appear in various ways. Karma arises from the power of afflictions, just as a sprout depends on a seed. By its power, it arises, and the interdependence is excellent. Afflictions arise from clinging to self, focusing on objects and giving rise to attachment to acceptance and rejection. The appearances that arise from the cause of karma and afflictions appear to those who cling in this way as true, real, and certain. Therefore, they grasp as true what appears as such. By the power of grasping, based on objects, various experiences of happiness and suffering manifestly appear. When appearances occur, in the realm of objects and subjects, without establishment, who experiences and what is experienced? If examined, it is also the nature of solitary emptiness. Those who do not know, understand, or are not confused in this way, with firm dualistic grasping, see as if something exists even though it does not. By the power of feeling, they are inevitably born into samsara. Just as whatever appears in dreams is merely a self-appearance, although it is not established as two, it appears as two and gives rise to attachment as if it were two. Its power is like experiencing happiness and suffering. The benefit of happiness and the harm of suffering are devoid of benefit and harm until they affect the mind. For those without mind, as if looking at something, happiness brings benefit and suffering brings harm. Happiness and suffering other than the mind can never meet the mind, for the indivisible mind is unlike others. Merely in the clarity of one's own mind, one is mistaken in essence, thinking, "It is happiness" or "It is suffering." In whom is the experience, If the experiencer and the experienced are without duality, how does one cause benefit or harm to the other? Mere clarity is like a reflection in a mirror. However it appears, it is merely an appearance, devoid of benefit or harm. Although the reflections of white and blue are different, both are merely reflections.

One is happy, one is not. Likewise, although happiness and suffering are different, They are merely clear aspects, one benefits, one does not harm. The agent and action are non-dual, devoid of parts, Even examining whether one benefits or harms oneself is false. On the very face of the mind, such as this, Since the object and subject are not established as two, Whatever arises is the same, merely a clarity, If one examines what is beneficial or harmful, it is extremely remote. However, grasping at self where there is no self, Thinking that the object benefits or harms me, Although there is no duality, strongly clinging to duality, Happiness and suffering appear as if I experience them. That unobstructable appearance of one's own face, Under the power of attachment, not abandoning craving, Constantly taking and grasping at various concepts, One makes the wheel spin in a continuous cycle. This appearance of truth, the self-image of beginningless habituation, Because it appears solid, nourishing attachment, Although knowing it is nonexistent, immediate benefit does not arise, It is difficult to abandon the bad habits of former practices. Thus, the end of samsaric happiness and suffering, Having decided with intelligence that it depends on the mind, When the nature of the mind is completely sought by the mind, If there is a self that experiences happiness and suffering in the mind, And there are two feelings, the self and the experienced, Then I would not be able to reverse it, But this clarity, this awareness, this self-experience, Is the mind, there is no other mind besides this. Other than this, there is no duality of experiencer and experienced, The mere clarity is unceasing, like the moon in water. Even if one examines well the essence of that mere clarity, It is not perceived anywhere, inside or outside, devoid of parts. Emptiness appearing like a mirage is, Self experiencing self, When the false cave collapses, The basis for establishing and the dharma called, The object of imputation is free from defilement, the true nature is like space, What is samsara, what is happiness, what is suffering? What is self, what is other, what is good, what is bad? This is uncreated by anyone, it is self-nature, On these rootless and baseless ways of being, Due to suddenly imputing "I," "mine," and "objects," The suffering of samsara arises. Even when it arises, it arises from this delusion of one's own mind. Even when it dissolves, it dissolves into this non-dual mind. If one does not know such a way of being, in the ocean of samsara, There is no other way to quench thirst taught by the Victorious Ones. Thus, if one measures well the meaning of suchness, Because it is devoid of all elaboration of objects, The great primordial emptiness is like the manner of space.
