If silver and the like are bound with substances including alkali, then the silver will become one-eighth mercury. Pure copper will also turn into silver from smelting. This is the definite method of binding mercury with alkali. Second, the pill binding method mentioned in the First Buddha Root Tantra: Here, in the process of alchemy, a little yellow sulfur and other sulfur should be melted, making it equal or half. For silver refining, use white sulfur. For gold refining, use lead to test, and for silver refining, use borax. Then, wrap it with gold leaf, and for silver refining, use silver leaf. Then, bind it with Smilax glabra soaked in cow urine, use it to coat the gold leaf, and apply cinnabar on the outside. Then, wrap it with potter's clay. Again, dry it in strong sunlight, and then perform fusion smelting with strong cow dung fire. Then, gradually remove the ashes, and bake the soil pills until their taste becomes like the taste near a large corpse (ro chen po), and the taste of gold and lead becomes equal. Then, burn it in the furnace with strong charcoal. Then, after cooling, break the pill, and in the center, whatever is mixed with gold is the collection that is combined with the pill, because mercury is bound. This is the binding of the pill. If sixty-four parts of copper are poured into it, it will become gold or silver as before. The pill binding method of the Root Tantra is explained in this way in the Great Commentary. Now, the binding methods of various irons in the field are discussed. Here, all the stones that exist on the earth, having the form of life, or the form of various animals, or resembling the body or shape of fruits, as well as other crying and animal heads and limbs.
