There exist sects that claim "true existence." Their thought is that the three realms are merely consciousness. Because it is a component of particles with six directional parts, atoms do not exist. Just as in a dream state, even though there is no substance of atoms, merely the appearance of mind, horses, cattle, and gardens, etc., appear as real and are fully engaged in activity. Similarly, in the waking state, due to the increased power of the mind's habitual tendencies, one awakens clearly, and even though there is no external object, the external object appears solid. Just as the illusion of hair falling out appears due to the power of cataracts in the eyes, or a white conch shell appears as gold due to bile disease, it is all due to the power of inner mental habitual tendencies. Therefore, those who cling to mere consciousness, when they asked the Buddha about suchness, the Blessed One, knowing their thoughts, said: 'These three realms are merely consciousness; there is no samsara other than consciousness. The cessation of worldly consciousness is the cessation of the seed of existence, therefore it is nirvana.' This is indeed the truth spoken for their perspective. The suffering of samsara arises from non-material consciousness, not from matter. Experiencing pleasure and pain is called samsara, and liberation from that is nirvana.' Thus, having heard the Buddha's words, completely abandoning the assertion of an agent and self, the Yogacharas, who proclaim the tenets of Buddhism, arose. Later, when bodhisattvas heard the teaching of the Dharma that transcends the world, they completely abandoned the assertion that consciousness is substantially existent, and some relied on the Middle Way, the path of perfect and complete enlightenment. Similarly, in the yogini tantras, it is said: 'Great illusion mother, extremely fierce mother, who generates and gathers.' etc., which is different from the creator of the tirthikas, just as it is thought that life (Tibetan: སྲོག་ང་) can generate and gather beings. Therefore, the Buddha's teachings, in accordance with the faculties, abilities, and thoughts of the beings to be tamed, teach the truth, and the Buddha's speech is not merely an ordinary sound produced from places like the crown of the head and the palate.

Because, in order to simultaneously teach the Dharma according to the individual inclinations of limitless sentient beings, it is not possible to teach the Dharma in accordance with the inclinations of immeasurable sentient beings even in limitless eons with one language. Therefore, sentient beings hear the Dharma in their own languages according to their own thoughts, but merely teaching the Dharma in one language cannot fully express all the teachings of the Bhagavan. Although sentient beings, according to their own thoughts, think that the Bhagavan has prophesied the answers to my questions, the Bhagavan does not have the grasping of self and others, and so on. If he had the conceptual thought of definite grasping, then the Bhagavan would also become a samsaric being, because he does not abide in the equality of non-apprehension of subject and object. For example, through the power of the mind of habit, one sees a Khenpo in a dream, asks questions about doubts, and the Khenpo resolves the doubts, but in reality there is no Khenpo, it is the habit of the students' own minds. Similarly, for those who have merit, in the appearance of their own minds, they will see the body of the Buddha and hear the words of the Buddha, but the Bhagavan is not birth and death. For this reason, the four Buddhist schools all rely on the power of the habits of the mind. The Bhagavan taught those who speak of the person to meditate on the impermanence of the person. To those who speak of external reality, to meditate on cessation, to those who speak of only-mind, to meditate only on the samadhi of only-mind, to the Madhyamikas, to meditate on the wisdom that is unchanging and non-dual, free from elaboration, of phenomena that appear like a dream. In this way, the selflessness of the person and the selflessness of phenomena are taught in sequence. The Nirvana accepted by the Vaibhashikas, Sautrantikas, and Vijnanavadins is the Nirvana with remainder, that is, the non-complete realization of suchness. The Nirvana accepted by the Madhyamikas is the Nirvana without remainder, the non-abiding Nirvana, because the twelve links of dependent origination, the cause and effect of samsara, are extinguished. Like falling asleep, there is no mind, and like the state of waking up, there is separation from the manifestation of subject and object. Like a dream and the fourth dhyana, for the time being, Nirvana is for ordinary people.
