It is not the case that appearances arise because of existence. Just as one clearly experiences the forms of horses, cattle, etc., in a dream, these appearances of external objects in the waking state also appear as solid, tangible forms due to the habitual imprints on one's own mind, without any external object of focus. It is like how, when one is accustomed to unpleasant things, the appearance of a skeleton actually arises. Therefore, the consciousness that is liberated from the transformation of the grasped and the grasper into separate entities is truly existent. Without it, the appearances of both samsara and nirvana could not arise. Those who have reached the other shore of the ocean-like treatises of the Yogacara school proclaim this. Furthermore, it is understood through the reasoning of being separate from one or many that the consciousness that is established as true is not established as either one true or many true. The various consciousnesses that appear as many are not established as true in the nature of one consciousness, because they are many and impermanent, each being a different dharma. The consciousness that is separate from appearing as many and without the grasped and the grasper cannot be established as one true. If the nature of consciousness were established as one true, then the appearance of many should never exist, but that is not the case, and it is understood through this very appearance of many. Therefore, the system of those who assert that consciousness is truly established is ruined. Thus, from its treatises, it is asserted that the three realms are only consciousness. If the various appearances of the three realms appear in consciousness, then how can consciousness be the only truth? If the appearance of many is a delusion of habit, and there is no appearance of many in its own nature, but it is self-aware and self-illuminating, separate from the grasped and the grasper, then, if there are no forms, etc., how does the consciousness that has them as objects appear in the form of the grasped? If it is said that it is due to the habitual imprints of non-afflicted ignorance, then, if this ignorance does not belong to the nature of the three realms, then it will transcend samsara, and this ignorance will become the consciousness of the Prajnaparamita, which is separate from the habitual imprints of samsara, which is unreasonable. If ignorance is of the nature of the three realms of existence and is only consciousness, and there is nothing else, then...

Because consciousness is truly established as the nature of ignorance in samsara, it is impossible to be separated from that ignorance. If the three realms are not merely consciousness, but there are other three realms arising from the power of ignorance, then the view that the three realms are merely consciousness would collapse. Furthermore, it is also explained the refutation of the momentary true establishment of consciousness. Here, all phenomena arise and perish in a single moment. If this occurs with arising and perishing simultaneously in a single moment without abiding, then because there is absolutely no moment of abiding from being established by itself, arising and perishing, even a rabbit's horn should have arising and ceasing. If it abides from arising, perishes from abiding, and arises from perishing, occurring in such a sequence, then abiding, perishing, and arising would become different characteristics, and without the other two at one time, things would not arise and cease in a single moment. If arising, perishing, and abiding are at the same time, what difference is there from admitting that a person is born, ages, and dies simultaneously? If arising and ceasing occur in a single moment, and if the latter arises from the cessation of the former phenomenon, it would be unreasonable, like lighting another candle after the previous one has been extinguished. If it arises not from what has ceased, then like a series of lighting one candle from another, there would be many consciousnesses existing simultaneously in a series. It does not arise from both ceased and unceased, because they contradict each other, so it is impossible to have a prior cause that is a mixture of the two. Therefore, saying that the latter moment arises from the former moment, this also cannot withstand the burden of investigation when examined with reason. Therefore, it is only comfortable without investigation, and it is not established as being able to withstand momentary examination. Therefore, the Madhyamikas say: Consciousness exists in ultimate truth, but the wise do not accept it, because it is free from the nature of one and many, like a lotus in the sky. It is neither existent nor nonexistent, neither both nor neither, nor is it the nature of both. That which understands liberation from the four extremes, that is the wisdom of the Madhyamikas. Thus, believing that consciousness exists in ultimate truth, the Madhyamikas who are proficient in the nature of ultimate truth do not accept it, because it is free from the truth of the nature of one and many, like a lotus in the sky, there is no truly established consciousness. In this way, conditioned and unconditioned phenomena
