When the karma created by that self, which is nominally designated as "I," ripens in the continuum of aggregates in a future life, both the designation and the meaning of "what I did ripens to me" are established without contradiction. Although in ultimate truth, there is no specific birth or arising, the fact that birth and arising exist due to dependent origination is not only not contradictory but also becomes one and the same. Understand this principle in the subsequent contexts as well. The ripening of the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions is unfailing. It is not contradictory that the agent is diminished or empty by being established by its own nature. For example, nominally, if a person sows seeds in a field, there will be a harvest. Although it is said that the person who sows the seeds in the field is the agent, there is no person, individual, or self other than the state of the continuum of aggregates of the person who performs the act of sowing seeds. That state of aggregates is a collection of many dharmas and is impermanent from moment to moment. Therefore, even though there is not the slightest single agent, the imputation of an agent to the continuum of many dharmas exists nominally. When that sower enjoys the harvest after the crops have ripened, it is not the agent himself who enjoys the fruit, since the continuum of aggregates at the time of sowing the seeds has ceased. However, without examining the continuum of aggregates, one grasps at the idea of "I" and thinks, "The grains I sowed have ripened, and I am enjoying them." Others also think, "This person is enjoying the grain that he himself cultivated." Similarly, performing virtuous and non-virtuous actions and experiencing their results, although the agent is empty, the action does not go beyond its own function, and it is also dependent on the continuum of aggregates. Know that in this way, one becomes an agent and an enjoyer. In this context, one should not say that the later self arises from the earlier self, or that the earlier self ceases when the later self exists. If there were arising and ceasing, the self would become a real entity, and therefore the absence of self would not be reasonable. Similarly, since phenomena that are real have the nature of arising and ceasing, even if there is no transference or goer of the earlier nature to the later, it is said that there is entering the path and going to cessation for the sake of liberation for all beings.
