What is it? Similarly, it is impossible for different situations such as suffering and happiness to occur, which is actually known. Therefore, you should realize that since it is in a state of constant change, the "self" is impermanent. If the "self" were self-existent and had functions such as perceiving objects, then how would this "self" become ignorant during deep sleep, without performing any activities such as perceiving objects through sensory consciousness? For the self that is self-established and permanent, since it has activity when awake, why can't it always have activity like this? Analyzing in this way through reason, it must be recognized that this "self" does not exist in all times and places, and that the ruler who dominates and pervades everything, and is permanent, is also not related to the power or activities of previous actions. Furthermore, in the continuum of all sentient beings, the co-emergent ego-grasping that has existed since beginningless time, with the aggregates of one's own continuum as the object, clings to the idea of "I." On this basis, the non-Buddhists consider the "self" to be self-existent and fabricate concepts such as permanence and pervasiveness. This imputed ego-grasping is like cherishing the firm seed of samsara. They say: If it is said that the aggregates are momentary, and the Shakyas (followers of Shakyamuni) believe there is no "self," then the efforts made to attain heaven and liberation will become meaningless. And, if it ceases, how can it produce results? They say this. Then, the sutras of the Buddha Bhagavan say: The profound Dharma of dependent origination, which transcends the extremes of permanence and annihilation, does not have even a particle of self-existence, but all nominal establishments are harmless and truly existent, explaining the meaning of the two truths without contradiction. The Dharma of dependent origination is cessation, that is, without self-nature or not established in the ultimate truth. Although it is not established in the ultimate truth, in conventional truth, it arises depending on the aggregation of causes and conditions. Whatever arises in conventional truth is cessation or without self-nature. Therefore, these are not cause-and-effect relationships of producer and produced, but are established through the way of existing in mutual dependence.

It is said as the way of the result. What is called emptiness means that these appearing things abide without self-nature by their own nature. It is not that there is another object to be negated apart from this, and the emptiness that is negated is not the self-nature of this (thing). Just as the nature of sugarcane is sweet, and the nature of fire is hot. Thus, the self-nature of all things is said to be emptiness. As it is said, emptiness does not make all things empty, but all things are empty. Thus, it is prevented or unborn by its own nature. Thus, the key to being empty by its own nature is that it appears or can appear. If it is not empty, or if it is truly established by its own nature, then it does not have to arise dependently. If it appears in all places and times by its own nature, then such an appearance is impossible in any place or time. Therefore, the key to emptiness is that it appears as the appearance of dependent origination. The key to the appearance of dependent origination is emptiness, which is not contradictory and becomes one meaning, which is the Middle Way. It does not fall into any side or direction such as appearance and emptiness, permanence and annihilation, so it should be understood according to the meaning of the four combinations of emptiness. To this, the scholars who speak of the Middle Way have named emptiness as appearing as cause and effect. After understanding in this way, it is said in the commentary that the Dharma of cessation is without self, etc., and that the Dharma of arising has arising, etc. It should be understood that this is explained in terms of the two truths. Here, the Dharma of dependent origination is said to be the former ceasing and the latter arising, and the latter arising and the former ceasing. In name, although there is no transfer of the agent from the cause and effect of arising and ceasing, it is also explained from the point of view of the establishment of the ripening of the agent. Here, when wandering in the three realms of existence, although there is no self-nature of the individual's self and the Dharma of self, such as the eye, etc., in the manner of a lamp flame and butter, etc., there is a stream of aggregates arising and arising dependently. Therefore, although the self of the agent is not established by its own nature, the aggregates
