If criticisms are made from the perspective of inherent existence, then these faults will not apply in any way when explained through the distinctions of dependence and contradiction. Regarding the reason for this, here, when the statement of the proposition exists, the statement of the reason does not exist; and when the reason is stated, the words of the proposition do not exist. Without a proposition, whose proof is the reason? Because these two are not subjects that exist simultaneously. This is like the sound of the proposition. When saying "Pratijñā" (Sanskrit Devanagari: प्रतिज्ञा, Sanskrit Romanization: pratijñā, Literal Chinese meaning: proposition), when saying "Pra," the latter two do not exist. Moreover, "Ra" and the vowel "A" also appear sequentially, not simultaneously. Similarly, the letters of speech arise and cease sequentially. Just as an unborn or dead son cannot perform actions, so too, when something is absent, that is, when the proposition is absent, the reason has not arisen; or when the reason is stated, the statement of the proposition has ceased. How can such a reason, not merely nominally but inherently, accomplish the task of proving what is to be proven? It cannot. If analyzed in this way, all worldly conventions such as cause and effect, characteristic and what is characterized, what is to be proven and what proves it, reason and proposition, are established through dependence. If they were not dependent but inherently existent, they would have to exist simultaneously, and one would have to generate the other, or be the proof, etc., but this is impossible. Therefore, a cause that is not merely imputed but inherently existent does not become an effect, because when the effect exists, the cause has ceased and is absent. Then, do you accept that it arises from no cause? No, the term "arising from no cause" does not mean the complete absence of a cause in conventional terms. The function of cause and effect is not something else, but when the effect exists, the function of the cause has ceased, and it is not necessary to produce the effect. Thus, a cause that is inherently existent does not become an effect, and in conventional terms, it does not arise from no cause either. Therefore, if analyzed from the ultimate perspective, the effect does not arise from itself, nor does it arise from another, nor does it arise from both itself and another, nor is it without a cause. Thus it should be understood.

It is composed of earth. The four kinds of birth cannot be measured by reason. This principle of dependent origination refutes the agent's self-established nature and the permanent function of the cause. So it is said. At this time, although there are many different ways in which the former lamas took the words, it is clearly revealed by the style of the scriptures that this is done from the perspective of ultimate analysis. If it is only a nominal term, then examining whether the argument and the thesis are consistent is one of the twenty-four kinds of inverted observations. Such inverted observations will become a refutation for those who accept that the pledge and the argument, the cause and the effect, etc., are established by their own nature; and it will not become a refutation for those who accept the imputed dependence. This shows that for those who believe that the appearance of dependent origination has no four kinds of birth, but the appearance is unstoppable, all nominal terms are flawless and nothing can refute it; while for those who accept that it is established by its own nature, all nominal terms are untenable and can be refuted. It should be understood that this is a profound meaning. Now it is said to refute the self. If the one self pervades all places and times, how can one experience the pain of separation from relatives? Because wherever one goes, the self is there, so there can be no place where one can be separated from the self and go elsewhere. Another fault is that the one indivisible self in the continuum of all sentient beings pervades everything in an indivisible way, so the suffering experienced by one sentient being, etc., will also be experienced by all sentient beings. If it is said that because the self in the continuum of each sentient being is different, the suffering of one sentient being does not have to be experienced by all sentient beings, then these many selves, because each becomes its own nature, there will be no self that pervades all places. If this self is permanent, then a permanent thing will not change from one state of itself to another, so how can the state of being shot by the arrow of desire change drastically? Even if it is impossible to change, sentient beings have ten states of desire, as stated in the Compendium on Valid Cognition, so who is it that is not shot by the arrow and is always unchanging?
