It should be understood sequentially, from six small kalpas to one kalpa. Asuras, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hells, these five together constitute the eleven existences of the desire realm. The abodes of Asuras are mostly included within the gods and nagas, but they are counted separately due to differences in lineage. Thus, there are eleven existences in the desire realm, sixteen in the form realm, and four in the formless realm, totaling thirty-one existences. The mantras for these thirty-one existences are: the four formless realms are the four syllables beginning with A, namely A (Tibetan: ཨ་, Devanagari: अ, Romanized Sanskrit: a, Literal Chinese meaning: A), Ā (Tibetan: ཨཱ་, Devanagari: आ, Romanized Sanskrit: ā, Literal Chinese meaning: A), Aṃ (Tibetan: ཨཾ་, Devanagari: अं, Romanized Sanskrit: aṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Am), Aḥ (Tibetan: ཨཿ, Devanagari: अः, Romanized Sanskrit: aḥ, Literal Chinese meaning: Ah), which is called "Ha-union," meaning Ha is free from both long and short, and these are the mantras of space. Even if one doesn't say "Ha-free from union," it is sufficient to say these four syllables, and it is thought that there is no need for this, as the syllable Ha is also empty and of the nature of space, but there are only four realms in the formless realm, and no other seed syllables are needed. Similarly, the vowels translated here do not have that meaning. In the other two expressions, the reason for saying "union" is due to the combination of words, and in terms of meaning, it is also to show that those places are free from attachment to seeing, etc. As clearly explained in the other four lower realms, they are described as having attachment to indulgence, seeing, touching, and binding. Aṃ (Tibetan: ཨཾ་, Devanagari: अं, Romanized Sanskrit: aṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Am), Aḥ (Tibetan: ཨཿ, Devanagari: अः, Romanized Sanskrit: aḥ, Literal Chinese meaning: Ah) Although it is a seed syllable of wisdom, here A is space, and it arises from that category. Similarly, the sixteen syllables beginning with I are for the sixteen realms of the form realm, namely I (Tibetan: ཨི་, Devanagari: इ, Romanized Sanskrit: i, Literal Chinese meaning: I), Ī (Tibetan: ཨཱི་, Devanagari: ई, Romanized Sanskrit: ī, Literal Chinese meaning: I), E (Tibetan: ཨེ་, Devanagari: ए, Romanized Sanskrit: e, Literal Chinese meaning: E), Ai (Tibetan: ཨཻ་, Devanagari: ऐ, Romanized Sanskrit: ai, Literal Chinese meaning: Ai), ending in wind. Ṛ (Tibetan: རྀ་, Devanagari: ऋ, Romanized Sanskrit: ṛ, Literal Chinese meaning: Ri), Ṝ (Tibetan: རཱྀ་, Devanagari: ॠ, Romanized Sanskrit: ṝ, Literal Chinese meaning: Ri), Lr (Tibetan: ཨར་, Devanagari: ऌ, Romanized Sanskrit: lr, Literal Chinese meaning: Er), Lṝ (Tibetan: ཨཱར་, Devanagari: ॡ, Romanized Sanskrit: lṛ, Literal Chinese meaning: Er), ending in fire. U (Tibetan: ཨུ་, Devanagari: उ, Romanized Sanskrit: u, Literal Chinese meaning: Wu), Ū (Tibetan: ཨཱུ་, Devanagari: ऊ, Romanized Sanskrit: ū, Literal Chinese meaning: Wu), O (Tibetan: ཨོ་, Devanagari: ओ, Romanized Sanskrit: o, Literal Chinese meaning: O), Au (Tibetan: ཨཽ་, Devanagari: औ, Romanized Sanskrit: au, Literal Chinese meaning: Ao), ending in water. Li (Tibetan: ལྀ་, Devanagari: ऌ, Romanized Sanskrit: ḷ, Literal Chinese meaning: Li), Lḹ (Tibetan: ལཱྀ་, Devanagari: ॡ, Romanized Sanskrit: ḹ, Literal Chinese meaning: Li), Al (Tibetan: ཨལ་, Devanagari: ale, Romanized Sanskrit: al, Literal Chinese meaning: Er), Āl (Tibetan: ཨཱལ་, Devanagari: āla, Romanized Sanskrit: āl, Literal Chinese meaning: Er), ending in earth. The first of the vowel-transformed syllables, starting with Ha and ending with Ya, are clearly explained in the scriptures as the ten existences of the desire realm, namely Ha Ha (Tibetan: ཧ་ཧཱ།, Devanagari: ह ह, Romanized Sanskrit: ha hā, Literal Chinese meaning: Ha Ha), Ya Ya (Tibetan: ཡ་ཡཱ།, Devanagari: य या, Romanized Sanskrit: ya yā, Literal Chinese meaning: Ya Ya), Ra Ra (Tibetan: ར་རཱ།, Devanagari: र रा, Romanized Sanskrit: ra rā, Literal Chinese meaning: Ra Ra), which can be transformed into the six heavens of the desire realm through the power of generosity and mantra recitation. Va Va (Tibetan: ཝ་ཝཱ་, Devanagari: व वा, Romanized Sanskrit: va vā, Literal Chinese meaning: Wa Wa) refers to Asuras and humans, who can be transformed into Asuras through the power of generosity, and into humans through the power of virtuous and non-virtuous actions. La La (Tibetan: ལ་ལཱ་, Devanagari: ल ला, Romanized Sanskrit: la lā, Literal Chinese meaning: La La) refers to animals and hungry ghosts, with small sins leading to rebirth as animals, and medium sins leading to rebirth as hungry ghosts. Combining the beginning and end of all consonants into one letter, namely Kṣa (Tibetan: ཀྵ་, Devanagari: क्ष, Romanized Sanskrit: kṣa, Literal Chinese meaning: Ka Sha), which is a combination of ka and sa, and transforming sa into ṣa, refers to the remaining eleventh existence of the desire realm mentioned above, namely hell.
