The Supreme Two-Footed One placed both feet swiftly upon my hair—thus the prayer was made. Then the Blessed One, the Buddha Dīpaṃkara, placed both feet upon the hair of the Brahmin youth named Sumati. The Brahmin youth following behind grew angry, saying: ‘Hey! Look—Dīpaṃkara Buddha treads upon Sumati’s hair like one treading upon an ox.’ The Buddha Dīpaṃkara turned and said to the monks in his retinue: ‘Do not belittle this hair. This is the person who, after innumerable eons, in this realm of mortals, will become the lamp of beings in the three worlds—the Tathāgata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Śākyamuni Buddha.’ Thus Dīpaṃkara Buddha gave the prophecy. At that moment, the Brahmin youth felt great joy, his hair shone with new brilliance, surpassing the ordinary. He abided in the sky; the multitude saw him and marveled, making aspirations: ‘May we in the future become his hearer-disciples.’ A maiden likewise vowed: ‘Wherever you attain Buddhahood, may I be reborn as a noblewoman, and in that age become a disciple among the nuns.’ King Dīpaṃkara accepted the old hair of Sumati; the son of King Rich-in-Treasures requested it and received it. When counted, there were eighty thousand strands. Ministers each received one strand, and in their homelands erected stūpas accordingly. After receiving the prophecy, Sumati was honored by King Dīpaṃkara, King Rich-in-Treasures’ son, and all the townspeople, who gathered offerings in abundance. Then Sumati said to the Brahmin youth: ‘I have received the prophecy of supreme awakening—where should you generate the mind?’ The youth replied: ‘I am not worthy, for Dīpaṃkara Buddha has already placed his feet upon your hair.’

At that time, I grew angry and said: ‘This Buddha has been trampled upon just like this person’s hair is trampled underfoot.’ The wise Loden Sangpo replied: ‘Come, let us go before the Buddha and renounce the world.’ Then both renounced the household life. Loden Sangpo mastered the Three Baskets, practiced according to Dharma, and upheld the teachings. After passing away, he was reborn in the Tushita heavenly realm. The Brahmin’s son named Loden, because he had once spoken disrespectfully to the Buddha, died and was reborn in hell. At that place, because Loden Sangpo in the past had offered blue aconite flowers to the Buddha, by the ripening of that karma, during the time of the Buddha he experienced great happiness in cyclic existence and also became a cause and condition for attaining Buddhahood. In the time of the Buddha, he also received vast offerings of various flowers and music from five hundred companions. The Buddha declared thus. This accords with what is stated in the Sutra Spoken by the Flame King. And in the Sutra of the Brahmin’s Son Cloud Prophecy, though some words differ, the meaning is similar. Here it is arranged according to the Brahmin’s Son Loden Sangpo’s Prophecy Sutra, and it may serve to illustrate other accounts as well. The names Loden Sangpo and Cloud Boy are explained by former masters as having the same meaning. At that time, there was also a woman named Zanglen Den, also called Utpala-ster. She is the same as the renowned woman. In the Sutra it is said: ‘The Kshatriya girl named Sa-tso-ma,’ which is another name for the renowned woman, also called Sa-wang-ma, Sa-kyong-ma, and Sa-tso-ma. The renowned one is the daughter of the Shakya Lakna-be-chen, and she was also the mother of the boy Voice Holder. Also, the Shakya Dri-lbu-sgra’s daughter named Bedma was accepted as queen by Prince Don-grub when, unmoved, he shot an iron arrow backwards. The Shakya Dus-leks’ daughter named Ri-dags-skye, because she uttered words of liberation from samsara, delighted the prince, who gave her a pearl necklace and accepted her as queen. These three became the principal queens of Prince Don-grub, while the others numbered in the hundreds of thousands as his retinue and consorts.

Within the essence of light and all phenomena, the holder of fame is regarded as supreme. The concealed one is also named the Mother Earth, and through this general designation, distinctions are made. As stated extensively in the sutras, scholars affirm that these should be explained by proper classification. In this way, through the display of fire, he received the sacred prophecy and attained the great patience of non-arising, abiding in the changeless body of Dharma. Manifesting innumerable emanations across the Buddha realms of the ten directions, his activities are immeasurable, accomplishing vast practices in each instant, beyond the realm of thought and expression. In this world, during the era of Buddha Radiant Protector, a Brahmin’s son named Wisdom Guru appeared; he was born once in Tushita Heaven as the divine son, the noble White Lotus. When the time came, he descended and beheld this continent of Jambudvīpa five times, then descended from Tushita, performing vast deeds of teaching and taming beings, as proclaimed in scriptures. During the Buddha’s lifetime, in various realms and for diverse sentient beings, he revealed profound and extensive Dharma teachings, turning the wheel of Dharma in three stages, encompassing all levels of instruction. With omniscient wisdom, out of great compassion for all beings, he answered all questions concerning the karma of beings throughout the three times without obstruction. Through miraculous powers, he displayed countless manifestations, liberating beings from suffering and establishing them in temporary and ultimate happiness. Thus, the lifespan and deeds of the Blessed One, as shown for these disciples in this world, should be known as distinct from others. Therefore, the earlier bodhisattva practices and great deeds of the Buddha are all collected and revealed in this sutra. The explanations herein accord with logic and reason, and align with other profound views. The name of non-self pervades boundless realms. Accounts of noble youths such as the virtuous and wealthy, and other stories corresponding to later transmissions, are gathered here as well. Though not every detail is recorded, in general, among excellent discourses, great treatises, and extensive chronicles, certain accounts are preserved — this text remains within the Tibetan collection.
