Because the teaching was not obtained, at that time one abided in conceptual cognition directed toward an object, clinging strongly with self-view, and thus developed intense attachment. Just as when seeing fire at night one gains the teaching, because upon seeing that Buddha, soon one attains the tolerance of the unborn Dharma. This is spoken by the Buddha. Moreover, in the Great Liberation Sutra it is also said: In past kalpas, during the Pure Kalpa, although one had served countless Buddhas, up to ninety-two koṭis and beyond, though such offerings were made, one did not obtain the Buddha’s teaching. From one kalpa to another, even reciting the names of the Buddhas could not bring perfect completion. After those kalpas passed, in the great assembly of the Thus-Gone One Immeasurable Light, by hearing and upholding the Expanded Great Liberation Sutra and the like, one attained the tolerance of the unborn Dharma and obtained the Buddha’s teaching. This was the Buddha’s word. Again, in the Enumeration of Dharmas from the Twin Sutra, it is said: In the past, through countless ninety-nine kalpas, when the Thus-Gone One ‘Supreme Jewel’ appeared, I became a donor, courageous in offering. Again, before the Buddha ‘Moon,’ I offered with all pleasurable requisites to twelve koṭis of Buddhas. Before the Buddha ‘Great Treasure Light,’ I made offerings to eighteen koṭis. Before the Buddha ‘Essence Assembly,’ offerings to eighteen koṭis. Before the Buddha ‘Emerging Topknot,’ offerings to twenty koṭis. Before the Buddha ‘Light Protector,’ offerings to twenty koṭis. Before the Buddha ‘Stainless Light,’ offerings to sixteen koṭis. Again, under the name of the Buddha ‘Śākyamuni,’ I made offerings to one hundred ninety-five koṭis of Buddhas, thus performing vast offerings in sequence. Again, offerings to ‘Wheel Destroyer,’ ninety koṭis of Buddhas; to ‘Adamantine Power,’ eighteen koṭis; to ‘Splendor of Manifest Light,’ thirteen koṭis; to ‘Kalpa King,’ twenty-five koṭis; and finally to the Buddha ‘Perfect Vision,’ twelve koṭis, who taught this classification of Dharma from the Twin Sutra. All these Buddhas gave prophecy for unsurpassed enlightenment, but the time for their teaching had not yet been met. Because of hearing the Dharma of the Twin, seven kinds of precious rain descended upon this Jambudvīpa, and I, at that very time, obtained the complete Buddha’s teaching of perfect awakening. Thus, it is known that for a long duration of kalpas, I had not obtained the Buddha’s teaching.

There was a time without numbers, a moment when he kindled the fire and became the moment of fire; from the infinite, boundless light I received teachings, and at the time of his teachings, I transcended suffering, seeking transformation in my mind, not forgetting it, passing it on to the beings of the world. In this time, the fire gradually emerged, the primordial light became in accordance with the universal principle, having been saved, passing over the unformed and its relationship to a certain time, covering every place without exception; it slowly brought forth a spiritual energy for all beings, thus allowing the totality to be once more received in ultimate wisdom with corresponding beauty, gradually spreading it.

He thought: This is an auspicious land. Then he went before the Brahmin seat-holder and asked: Are you the one named Good Wisdom? He replied: I am. Thus he was established as the seat-holder, given food, and bestowed with one of the five great gifts. Good Wisdom accepted four offerings such as golden garlands, saying: I practice purity, therefore I cannot accept a woman. That maiden, seeing that the youth Good Wisdom was dignified in form, beautiful and pleasing to the heart, requested: Please take me as yours! He replied: It is not suitable for me to accept. Since the maiden was given by the king but not accepted by the Brahmin youth, she went to the royal palace called Marme (Palace of Fire). There, removing her golden ornaments, she offered them to the garland-bearer of flowers and said: These are precious; please, each day, like worshiping the gods, offer blue at the vessel’s mouth. Thus it was done. The Brahmin youth Good Wisdom carried the four great gifts to the preceptor, and received in return five hundred Kārṣāpaṇa coins, which were again bestowed upon Good Wisdom. That evening, Good Wisdom dreamed ten dreams: drinking the great ocean, traveling in the sky, holding the mighty sun and moon in his hands, kings approaching with wooden chariots, seeing many sages, white elephants, geese, lions, and riding a great mountain. Awaking, he wondered: Who can interpret this dream? Nearby there was a sage with five superknowledges, to whom he asked. The sage said: I cannot interpret it, but you should go to the king’s palace Marme, where the Buddha himself has appeared, who has invited you and will interpret for you. Thus Good Wisdom arrived on the very day that the Buddha appeared at the king’s palace Marme. The king, in order to make offerings to the Buddha, decreed that all flowers be gathered, so no one else could obtain flowers. Then the maiden said to the garland-bearer: Please offer blue at the vessel’s mouth for me. Indeed, the king collected all flowers. The maiden said: Look to the flower pond…
