He made a prayer. When the Brahmin elder named “Bestower” appeared, the Thus-Gone One, the “Bestower of the Body,” gathered all possessions for ten thousand years. Likewise, when there was King Glorious Essence, a Brahmin named Difficult-to-Practice gave him his own supremely beautiful daughter. Later, when there was the monk named Pleasing-to-the-Mind, the Thus-Gone One “Fearsome Teacher,” and others, during one eon, twenty thousand Buddhas appeared successively. He, in accord with their minds, offered to many Buddhas. The manner of offering was explained in the “Fivefold Root Vinaya,” in “Wise and Foolish,” in “Gampo,” in the hundred treatises of exposition spoken at various times, and in numerous discourses taught in various collections of sutras, which are extremely vast. And in the “Sutra of Cutting Off Errant Conduct,” the Blessed One said: “I am named ‘Turner of the Wheel.’ I was reborn as a lion twelve times, as a great king named Great Deity four times. Likewise, I was reborn as Brahma Bestower, Radiant Flame, Brahmin Carpenter, Honored by Many, and Handsome in Form—such names in accord with ‘Turner of the Wheel’ were exceedingly many. In this way I offered to Buddhas. Moreover, there were also times when, abiding in lands intended in past aspirations, for countless eons I made immeasurable offerings to Buddhas, yet did not obtain prophecy of Dharma.” Again, in the “Sutra of Expanding Wisdom,” it is said: “In past times, through attachment to forms, I abandoned countless supreme women; through attachment to sounds, I offered music of many tones to stūpas of the Thus-Gone Ones, yet was never satisfied; through attachment to scents, I abandoned countless fragrances; through attachment to taste, I abandoned many kinds of fruits and flavors, yet found no contentment; through attachment to touch, I abandoned many soft garments; through attachment to Dharma, I studied many kinds of knowledge, yet never reached full satisfaction. Only faith in the Dharma that transcends suffering is a faith that is never diminished. Therefore, bodhisattvas should train in various faiths, seeing all faiths as qualities that can cut off.” Thus it was spoken.

From the 'Treasury of Extensive Dharma' and other sutras: In the past, when the Blessed One turned the Dharma wheel, he honored and upheld many Buddhas whose names were in harmony with his, and he never spoke of honoring countless Buddhas whose names were not in accord, let alone those contrary. Because in past times, the Blessed One himself turned the Dharma wheel, under the name 'Shakyamuni Buddha,' accompanied by countless Śrāvakas, and with all requisites offered, he perfected unsurpassed awakening. Likewise, to eight thousand Buddhas named 'Dīpaṃkara Buddha (Lamp-Lighter Buddha),' offerings were made; likewise to thirty thousand Buddhas named 'Blazing Buddha'; likewise to sixty thousand Buddhas named 'King Śāla Buddha,' who renounced and went forth; likewise to one hundred fifty thousand Buddhas named 'Exalted Limbs Buddha,' who also turned the Dharma wheel, receiving offerings in order. Again, to one hundred fifty thousand Buddhas named 'Blazing Radiance Buddha'; to ninety Buddhas of the Kauṇḍinya lineage; to nine thousand Buddhas named 'Light-Protector Buddha.' Moreover, in aeons where no Buddhas arose, to one hundred ninety thousand Pratyekabuddhas, as long as life endured, alms and offerings were made. Across five hundred kalpas, he served and honored one hundred million and eighty-four thousand Pratyekabuddhas; thereafter, for five hundred kalpas, he was born in the Brahmā heavens, and then again born as a king in Jambudvīpa; later as lord of the gods; then again amidst countless millions of humans. In those times, apart from the Pratyekabuddhas, no Buddhas appeared in the world. After one hundred thousand kalpas had passed, the Tathāgata 'All-Concealed' appeared; departing from the Brahmā realm, he was born as the 'Good Vision Wheel-Turning Monarch,' when human life lasted ninety thousand years. He honored the Buddha and his retinue as long as life endured. Thus through that kalpa, and further through innumerable seven hundred kalpas, to Buddhas named 'Jambudvīpa Garland' and so forth—one thousand, sixty-two thousand, eighty-four thousand, five hundred, sixty-two thousand in number—all were honored and served, as declared in the scriptures.
