From folio 901. From folio 901. It has sixteen tiers, the fourth tier, extremely adorned, manifested with many eyes, depicted in images, bound by threads of gold. All precious mountains and the rivers of the four continents are made of gold. Above them are nets woven of priceless jewels. The ground is spread with countless precious gems. Bells of the seven treasures are hung upon golden nets as decoration. This is the realm obtained by beings who have accumulated immeasurable virtues. It is beautified with groves of the seven precious trees. Inside and outside, it is filled with vast enjoyments. When humans wish to play the sounds of the lute, harp, or the five types of instruments, or wish to delight in the music of fragrance and taste, their desires are fulfilled. Lifespans extend to millions or billions of years, and when wishing for more, it increases likewise, always abiding in joy. When the Tathāgata named “Nectar Light” arrived, the king named “Delight in Seeing” decorated the world of the fourth continent with banners and canopies, making it wholly adorned. Along with the people of earlier times, he offered the Tathāgata and his retinue, and even gave his own sons, wives, and attendants as offerings. The Blessed One, together with eighty thousand śrāvakas, with a single method, for eighty thousand years, partook of hundreds of flavors of food and fully accomplished benefit. Again, there was a king named “Lion’s Wisdom,” skilled in all sounds and treatises. He gathered together all mendicants and brahmins of that land, and held a great festival with hundreds of flavors of food, covering them with Kāśā cloth. For eighty thousand years, day and night without interruption, he continuously gave alms. To the monks and brahmins he also inquired fully into the meaning of the teachings, and observed the conduct of the minds of all beings. In order to discern the strength and weakness of the Lord of Wisdom, he strove in this way. Again, in former times, there was a brahmin named “Moon Love,” like a great sāla tree, whose lineage was extremely pure, a holder of scriptures, who possessed the three branches of knowledge, well-learned, who had gone to the other shore, who proclaimed the foundational scriptures that spread throughout the world, who knew the discipline of giving, and the origins of birth…

Understanding the nature of the great earth-seed. Concerning the words of the three kinds of wisdom, there is no written form. When he attained the miraculous power arising from the ripening of karma, he became one who could gather all heretics, beggars, and all seekers, sustaining them, and gave public displays for one thousand, two thousand, three thousand, and four thousand people. By this means, he performed offerings and generosity for eighty thousand years, making monthly offerings. Yet wherever he became intensely attached, that very place did not receive merit. At that time, the Thus-Gone One, called ‘Free from All Suffering,’ descended into the world. The assembly of Hearers gathered in numbers equal to the stars, and the assembly of Bodhisattvas was likewise vast. Then the Brahmin Candraprīta thought: ‘Although my offering-place is fully adorned with merit, the Thus-Gone One and the Hearers do not come. By what means can I cause them to enter this place of offerings? Is it because of some fault in my giving that they do not come? Since the Buddha and the Saṅgha constantly partake of food, perhaps, as meals are already provided, they do not enter here.’ Then the Brahmin, early the next morning, arose, surrounded by many Brahmins and Brahmin women, mounted upon a white female elephant, and went before the Thus-Gone One. At that time, the Thus-Gone One was seated beneath a tree, exceedingly beautiful and a great tamer of beings. Seeing him, the Brahmin thought: ‘Now I know the measure of the monks; the Blessed One has come here. I shall offer food, drink, and medicine to the Blessed One.’ Then he bowed to the Thus-Gone One and, speaking his own name three times, said: ‘Blessed One, the fault of my past holding has now been dispelled. Blessed One, so long as the Buddha and Saṅgha live, I shall serve them with all possessions I own.’ The Blessed One declared: ‘The Buddha’s appearance in the world is not for the sake of a single being, therefore he will not remain long while in the world.’ The Brahmin then requested: ‘Then please allow me to serve and make offerings for seven days.’ The Blessed One remained silent, thereby granting consent. Thus the Brahmin Candraprīta then...
