Thus, for those, the gain of requisites such as Dharma robes will occur. The Buddha said, "Holder of Light, this is the work for those of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, namely, abiding in the aggregate of morality and extensively seeking learning." When such teachings were given, they would only abide in broken morality, conceal the seeking of Dharma, and diligently engage in activities to make offerings to the stupas of the Tathagata, and observe their minds living by that. Furthermore, Holder of Light, all such aspects of places that the Tathagata reveals, and those who reveal them correctly, are for the sake of those sons and daughters of good families, so that they will hear these categories of Dharma, and having heard them, they will also completely abandon those faults. Having spoken thus, wishing to gather the meaning of those and practice it, for the sake of all sentient beings, having obtained the precious Bodhicitta that desires to attain Buddhahood, one should think thus: I have obtained the leisure and endowment, and at this time of encountering the teachings of the Tathagata, let alone the worldly activities of bad results, although making offerings to the body of the Tathagata and so on generates immeasurable merit, the Tathagata mainly instructs householders to accumulate merit based on material possessions. Therefore, the most excellent activity for those who have gone forth following the Buddha is praised as abiding in morality and internally. I shall accomplish those as much as possible according to the teachings of the Tathagata, and especially since we have been bound from a time without beginning or end, disturbed and destroyed day and night by various conceptualizations like wind, clouds, and ocean waves, and afflicted by various sufferings on top of not having obtained any extraordinary qualities, now, no matter what, having been liberated from the box of various conceptualizations like enemies inside and out, even for a single moment, if one focuses on what is great in merit and great in meaning.

With the form of the Thus-Gone One as the object of meditation, one cultivates practice according to the yoga of calm abiding and special insight. In this way, with the power of a firm and singular vow, one supplicates the Guru, the Victorious One, and his spiritual heirs to bestow blessings. First, having withdrawn from distractions and bustle—by day free from worldly wanderings, and by night free from noise and reading—one abides in a peaceful, suitable place endowed with the path of meditation. By properly relying upon the preliminaries, good conditions are obtained. Then, by a skilled artist, the form of the King of the Shakyas, the Tathāgata, is drawn beautifully in accordance with ritual, pleasing to behold. With correct proportions and measurements, one contemplates with faith, recollecting the blessings of the Thus-Gone One, reciting the essence of reliance, thereby causing the image to abide vividly before oneself, neither too near nor too far, just in accord with a proper object of perception. Looking upon it thus, one cultivates genuine devotion toward the actual body of the Thus-Gone One. Think in this way: The Tathāgata arises from the boundless accumulations of merit and wisdom, from inconceivable causes, and appears in the world like a rare Udumbara flower, manifesting but once in a hundred eons. The Tathāgata is adorned with thirty-two excellent marks and eighty fine signs, with nothing discordant when seen. In the world of gods and humans, his form is supremely sublime, excelling all. At that time, all beings of that realm perceive him in common, and he teaches Dharma, displaying diverse miraculous manifestations. For the sake of beings he demonstrates manifold conduct—walking, going, rising, reclining—and by these means he causes the roots of virtue of limitless beings to ripen. Our Teacher, Śākyamuni, the Lion of the Śākyas, was born into the Śākya clan, and in the end attained Buddhahood. In places such as Deer Park at Ṛṣipatana, he taught Dharma to assemblies of bodhisattvas, hearers, and large gatherings of humans. One should thus recall his names and aspects, and meditate upon the form of that Thus-Gone One’s body.

Its aspect is thus: The Thus-Gone One is endowed with the aggregates of morality, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom, the aggregate of liberation, and the aggregate of the wisdom that directly perceives liberation. These are pure dharmas, free from defilement, immeasurable like space, inconceivable in qualities. Out of great compassion, he draws near and embraces us, undertaking countless hardships for our sake, as vast as the dust of the ocean, to arouse the mind of awakening and to begin the practice. In this way, through three incalculable eons, he perfected the six perfections, accumulating boundless, inconceivable merit and wisdom. He abandoned all obscurations, conquered the four māras, accomplished all qualities of dharma, perfectly and completely, attaining the great wisdom body that knows all aspects. Ultimately, he became the unsurpassable refuge, protector, and friend of all beings. By recollecting such a Blessed One, bowing in reverence, praising his name, seeing his form, and single-pointedly focusing the mind, even the smallest root of virtue becomes the cause of supreme enlightenment. This is due to the power of the Thus-Gone One’s previous vows and the inconceivable strength of wisdom. Therefore, we should understand ourselves to be fortunate, arousing vast faith in recollecting the Buddha. Thereafter, toward the Buddha’s form, our minds should remain unwavering, not lax, remembering him constantly without decline, not distracted by conceptual thoughts, but focused solely upon him. By gradually training in the nine methods of calming the mind, until the attainment of single-pointed concentration, one should persevere. One may contemplate the Buddha’s whole body, or particularly the marks such as the white hair-tuft, or focus the mind upon the unmanifest ushnisha, or stabilize the mind by attaining meditative absorption and the pacification of agitation.
