Then he thought: If I could possess such a body, how excellent it would be! Thus, supreme joy and faith arose in his heart. He found no delight in anything at home, and while living in the household he could not achieve such a body. Therefore, he resolved: I shall depart from home and go forth. Later, when he was sixteen years old, endowed with great diligence and having matured his faculties, he prostrated at his parents’ feet and said: “Please permit me to renounce and go forth into the teaching of the Blessed One.” His parents replied: “Young one, do not say such words! We two have only you as our single son; if we were not to see you, we would die of grief.” The boy replied: “By no means will I cause you suffering, but I must go forth.” His parents asked: “How then will you act?” The boy answered: “From today onward, until I have gone forth, I shall not bow, I shall not meditate, I shall not enter into sleep, I shall not nourish my body with butter or rice-gruel, and I shall not utter even a few words of virtue or non-virtue.” Thereupon he sat without turning his gaze outward, spoke not a word, and for a whole day did not partake of food. His parents brought him a hundred kinds of delicacies, entreating him day and night without ceasing, but he uttered not a single word. Thus, for two days he did not eat food; his mother gathered five hundred people nearby with a hundred delicacies, offering and entreating him day and night, but he did not look at their faces nor speak a word. For three days he did not eat food; his father gathered five hundred more, offering as before, but he remained the same. For four days he did not eat food; his uncle gathered five hundred more, offering as before. For five days he did not eat food, and then his parents collected all the treasures of their palace—great wealth, gold, jewels, pearls, vaidurya stones, and other precious gems, as well as every kind of clothing and ornament—piling them into one place, adorning them with maidens like celestial nymphs...

Adorned with eighty-four thousand ornaments, arranged all together in one direction. In short, all the enjoyments and treasures found near the king’s palace were displayed in front. His two parents, five hundred attendants above, eighty-four thousand youths, and the multitude of beings, all brought a hundred kinds of delicious food and, day and night, continually urged the youth: “Young one, please enjoy this food of offering! Remain in this house, accept our gifts and our merit!” And the women, too, with joy, play, and songs, entreated him not to abandon the king’s household. At that time, the great energetic Bodhisattva, without looking at or speaking to those gathered, remained unmoved. For six days he did not eat, and apart from directing his mind toward the Buddha, he abandoned all other thoughts, not even giving rise to the concept of food. His parents, relatives, women, and the crowd, wept loudly, tears streaming, falling to the ground, grasping at his feet, yet he did not turn his gaze upon them. Meanwhile, above the king’s palace, a deity appeared, manifesting great miraculous powers in the sky, and addressed the multitude with verses: “Those who strive for enlightenment are steadfast like mountains, their power unshakable, never abandoning their vow. Though the earth itself may be overturned, though fire may transform into water, still such noble friends cannot be moved from this place. Therefore, do not harbor displeasure, nor commit evil deeds; for if deluded, one may wander for aeons in cyclic existence. This Bodhisattva abides for the welfare of all beings, diligently striving for the sake of manifesting enlightenment. Attaining perfect Buddhahood is not difficult for them. But if one seeks pleasures and enjoyments, forsaking the path of enlightenment, how can such beings attain the wisdom and bliss of the Tathāgata? The precious jewels and garments of the three-thousandfold world...”

Even if I were to fill this place with divine objects from other realms, I would not be able to generate attachment to them. Whatever sinful deeds have been done out of ignorance, one should confess. The wise, having confessed their faults, do not dwell in the same actions again. Thus, when the deity urged, the Bodhisattva's parents, relatives, and other assemblies of people confessed their faults and said to the youth: "Youth, go as you have thought! Enjoy yourself thoroughly! And also eat! If you do not eat, you will face death!" So they said. Then, although the Bodhisattva had already fasted for seven days, because he remembered the Buddha, the gods infused his body with radiance for seven days, his faculties did not change, and the color of his face did not fade. Thus, the Bodhisattva fasted for seven days, disregarding his household, abandoning the great kingdom like spittle, leaving behind eighty-four thousand women, as well as his parents, relatives, and other assemblies of people, all with faces filled with tears, weeping. He carried the image of the Thus-Gone One and departed from his great city, entering a desolate forest inhabited by fierce beasts. Having entered, he placed the image of the Thus-Gone One on a base adorned with cloth, and in front of it, he spread a grass mat, sat in the lotus position, straightened his body, and meditated on the image of the Thus-Gone One. As he meditated on it, he thought to himself: "If even the image of the Thus-Gone One is so beautiful, what need is there to speak of the Blessed One himself? The Blessed Buddha is so beautiful, it is truly wondrous; those who have seen the Thus-Gone One are truly fortunate." He also thought: "How should one see the Thus-Gone One?" Then, a deity dwelling in that forest, knowing the Bodhisattva's thoughts, said to him: "Friend, what you are thinking, how should one see the Thus-Gone One, that image of the Thus-Gone One..."
