Samadhi is attained when endowed with four qualities. What are the four? Unwavering faith, unflagging diligence, wisdom that does not rely on others, and attending to and honoring virtuous spiritual friends. Thus, and so on, the qualities for attaining it, as they are taught, if diligently practiced, that samadhi will be attained. By this, with little effort, countless Buddhas of the ten directions appear before one's eyes, and all collections of qualities such as hearing, remembering, wisdom, realization, paramitas, dharanis, samadhi, and miraculous powers are subsequently attained, without falling away from unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, not being born in unfavorable circumstances, and in all births, obtaining a body endowed with excellent form, high lineage and many retinues, and even in dreams, seeing the Buddha and not being separated from him, and so on, inconceivable benefits are also attained. This is extensively taught in the sutra itself, and should be read there. At the time of the great terrors of the future, if one hears this samadhi and holds it, then that one will have also attended to and honored me and the Buddhas of the past, or those who have not yet come. Thus, and so on. Good Guardian, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivate this samadhi? Good Guardian, just as I am now sitting before you and teaching the Dharma, Good Guardian, a Bodhisattva should view the body of the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, each major mark of a great being being generated by a hundred merits. The signs should also be held. Having held them, one should train in this way: Alala, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One is so beautiful and wonderful, I too in the future will have such a fully accomplished body. Thus, and so on, the way of focusing the mind is taught, and having focused the mind in this way, endowed with excellent aspects, one should also examine what is "I," and what is "enlightenment," and thereby generate a definite understanding of no self-nature. Such methods are also taught. The praise of benefits, etc., should be extensively read in the sutra itself. In the Seven Hundred Prajnaparamita Sutra, there is the samadhi called "One Aspect of Manjushri's Array."

If there is mindfulness, and one applies this samadhi, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. This "Mañjuśrī's Adornment," called "One Aspect," is a word of no birth. A son or daughter of good family who wishes to enter the samadhi of One Aspect should first thoroughly inquire into the Prajñāpāramitā, and then they will enter the samadhi of One Aspect. Why is that? Mañjuśrī is unborn, which is unmoving, cannot be moved, is not to be moved, is inconceivable, is not to be thought, is immeasurable. A son or daughter of good family who wishes to enter the samadhi of One Aspect should rely on solitary bedding, delight in places without commotion, not attend to all signs, sit in the lotus position, and there, in a non-objective manner, remember one Tathāgata. They should also remember all dharmas. When remembering that Tathāgata, they should also hold their name. Having heard that name, focusing on it, they should look directly at the direction in which that Tathāgata resides and sit there. Remember it. If that Tathāgata is remembered, then by remembering that, one will also remember the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present. Why is that? Because the Tathāgatas are one. Mañjuśrī, just as the Buddha qualities of one Tathāgata are immeasurable, and the eloquence is immeasurable, so too, having obtained the samadhi of One Aspect, with one unborn, one should know the immeasurable distinctions of the categories of dharma. Here, whatever will decline, and whatever the Tathāgatas, the Arhats, the perfectly awakened Buddhas, have spoken, and as many categories of dharma as Ānanda has fully grasped, will appear here. Having cultivated this samadhi of One Aspect, for as long as its lifespan is, for that long it will remain, and it will teach the Dharma in the world including the four continents.

O Mañjuśrī, in the Great Vehicle of the Bodhisattvas, some may think: “What indeed is this samādhi of single-pointed concentration?” To those who give rise to such thought, it is explained as the samādhi upheld by the proclamation of boundless qualities. Whoever correctly accepts and abides as it is taught will perceive the virtues of this samādhi. Therefore, as it is declared, one should not waver but uphold it. This has been spoken. Such a samādhi cannot be accomplished by a mind grasping at signs. For example, a man possesses a precious jewel but has not cast it away; if another inquires of its value and qualities, he will know them as immeasurable. Yet, only after offering it up and relinquishing it does its brilliance appear, just as with that jewel. Similarly, the sun’s rays pervade all, and as the waters from four directions all enter into the ocean of one taste, so too does this samādhi reveal that all dharmas are unborn and of one nature. This teaching is presented at the end of the seventeenth volume of the “Sūtra on the Full Retention of the Bodhisattvas’ Roots of Virtue.” Furthermore, in the “Maitreya’s Great Lion’s Roar Sūtra” it is said: In the past, countless, immeasurable, inconceivable eons ago, a Tathāgata named Star Radiance appeared in the world, and after his passing, there was a Bodhisattva named Great Diligence, adorned with a handsome form, born as a prince in a land of suffering, of brahmin lineage, like the son of a great Śāla tree. At that time, monks engaged in the Dharma created diverse depictions of the Tathāgata’s body. One monk drew a well-crafted and fully accomplished image of the Tathāgata upon a banner and brought it into the palace of Bodhisattva Great Diligence. When the Bodhisattva beheld the image, he thought: “If the Tathāgata’s body were only like this, then how could such a one be called Buddha?”
