If one gains certainty in a single point, then even those who aspire to the Śrāvaka or Pratyekabuddha vehicles—though inferior—are instructed by the Buddha through skillful means accordingly. Those who have attained the fruit of the Śrāvaka path, as stated in this sūtra, such as Śāriputra and other Arhats, are also foretold by the Buddha to eventually attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Concerning the Buddha’s pure lands, limitless lifespan, and other ultimate profound realities, by relying upon stainless wisdom that rests upon the dharmatā, firm faith is generated. This sūtra surpasses others, for it establishes supreme wisdom and thus leads to realization of the ultimate meaning. Therefore, other Bodhisattvas, adorned with supreme mind and merit, should follow and learn from it. Hence this scripture, drawn from the sūtras, expresses its essential meanings so that, out of compassion, those beings of the degenerate age who cannot grasp vast teachings may still hear its concise essentials. The Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, in the form of a great white elephant with six tusks, surrounded by Bodhisattva assemblies, requested to uphold this Dharma teaching, guarding it so not a single word or letter be lost. The preacher of Dharma, upon seeing Samantabhadra’s body, will obtain dhāraṇīs such as the revolving dhāraṇī, and thus extensive praises were spoken. The Tathāgata also gathered the Bodhisattvas of that assembly and entrusted them to proclaim this Dharma to others. If so, it is as if one encounters the Buddha once again. We also should, with reverence, uphold the Dharma and the Tathāgata, and demonstrate it to others as much as possible. Thus, whoever gives rise to faith and performs offerings to a Buddha possessing boundless qualities, it is as if he has equally done so to all Buddhas. As the skillful magician once asked: By offering to a single Buddha, is it indeed offering to the Buddhas of the ten directions? The Buddha replied: Just so. For all such Buddhas abide in my Dharma realm; there is no separation whatsoever. They all accept and cultivate the offerings universally.

I shall become great. They all attained equality in the Dharma-nature. There is also no difference among the Buddhas. Thus it is said. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says: Just seeing the Buddha can transform the karmic obscurations of sentient beings. Likewise, it can also dispel the deeds of demons. It also says: In the continuum of one mind, remembering the qualities of the Victorious One, the Tathagata is extremely vast, who can remember? That person has no fear of all the evil realms. It also says: All the happiness and bliss in this world arise from the power of the Victorious One. Gaze upon the incomparable field of merit—the appearance of the Victorious One. It also says: The Dharma-realm is boundless, pervaded by the Victorious One. Equal to sentient beings, manifesting countless bodies. Explaining this Dharma principle to all sentient beings. It also says: In the unreal sentient beings like space, the Buddhas appearing like images appear for the benefit of all sentient beings. It also says: Even the merit of just one pore, all sentient beings in the world cannot know, the protectors are like endless space. Thus it is said. Taking the faith of knowing cause and effect as the cause, remembering the Tathagata, reciting names and dharanis, etc., strive to practice constantly as much as possible. Even if you cannot do so, you should diligently practice within seven days, etc., which is of great significance. In the Holy Ratnamegha Sutra, it says: With strong faith in the inconceivable qualities of the Buddha, remember within seven days, abandoning others, only remembering the Buddha. After seven days, the next morning, wearing clean clothes, etc., abide in the ritual of offering. That night you will see the Buddha. If the ritual is not complete, or there is no one-pointed mind, you will see the Buddha at the time of death. Thus it is said. Similarly, if we briefly state the meaning from the Samadhi Sutra where the present Buddha abides manifestly: Bodhisattvas, whether householders or renunciates, should live in solitude. Regarding where the Tathagata abides, the appearance of the name, and the appearance of the Buddha's body, repeatedly remember in the manner of hearing. The discipline is pure and undefiled, without distracted mindfulness, from one day to

If for seven days one focuses the mind on the Buddha without distraction, then on that very day one will behold the Buddha. If not seen while awake, then in dreams the Buddha’s face will be revealed. Thus it is spoken. Likewise, by such practice, in the western realm of bliss, there is the Buddha called Amitābha. Having heard his name and recalling it, just as a man of desire-world hears of a most beautiful woman elsewhere, though never having seen her, yet becoming attached and recalling her often, he then in dreams experiences union and pleasure with her. So too, with the presently manifest Buddha abiding through samādhi in this world, if one hears merely his name, dhāraṇī, or some virtues, and then remembers and repeatedly contemplates, one will behold Amitābha Buddha and so forth, and may make supplications. Thus, through mindfulness of the Buddha, relying on the Buddha’s power, one’s own root of virtue, and attainment of concentration, one will behold the Buddha. For example, one’s face reflected in a mirror: though the form does not truly enter the mirror, due to conditions it appears therein. In this way, by firm contemplation, one sees the Buddha and, through the teachings bestowed, the mind becomes illuminated. The Buddha is not literally arriving from elsewhere, nor standing directly before oneself, but through the workings of one’s own conceptual mind such an appearance arises. Likewise, the three realms are only mind. The mind, searched for inside and outside, is not found; it arises dependently upon objects of thought, like an illusion, devoid of substance. That which is without true existence is none other than one’s own nature, unborn and undying, without object of grasping, from which arises the wisdom of non-conceptual knowing. Thus the Bodhisattva perceives the Buddhas face-to-face.
