Upon hearing this classification of the Dharma, one generates the mind of unsurpassed complete enlightenment. At that time, from the intermediate space of appearances, clouds of offerings such as celestial flowers, incense, music, parasols and so forth rain down as showers to make offerings to the Blessed Buddha and his retinue, and also to countless hundreds of thousands of Buddha-fields, along with sounds of praise. The Blessed One said: If one explains this classification of the Dharma which shows the lifespan of the Tathāgata, then any sentient being who even once gives rise to devotion or evident faith will produce such a vast amount of merit as sons and daughters of the noble lineage that one should carefully keep it in mind. He further expounded how great that merit is. Desiring unsurpassed complete enlightenment, having given alms over countless eons in the hundreds of thousands of billions and practiced the five perfections except for the perfection of wisdom, the virtuous roots of such a person—if he merely gives rise to a single thought of devotion to this classification of the Dharma that shows the Tathāgata’s lifespan—cannot be equaled by a hundred showers of merit, nor can it be borne by example or cause. Those who have faith in this teaching will not turn back from unsurpassed enlightenment; such a state has no locus. Those who receive, enter, and internalize this classification of the Dharma will generate immeasurable merit that turns into the wisdom of a Buddha. Hearing, reciting, writing, copying, and offering flowers and so forth to this classification of the Dharma generates inconceivable merit. When one hears this classification and with superior thought gives rise to faith, the sign of that superior thought is as follows: one sees the Blessed Buddha Śākyamuni on Vulture Peak Mountain teaching the Dharma from the midst of the śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas and bodhisattvas; one sees that this Buddha-field is established upon the foundation of the Bodhi tree, with buildings adorned with ornaments, and sees bodhisattvas dwelling therein. After the Buddha passes into nirvāṇa one hears this classification of the Dharma.

Thus, upon the foundation of not abandoning, those who are the offspring of such a noble lineage, by means of superior intention and faith, if it is said that they recite and read, what need is there to say more? They are indeed connected with the Thus-Gone One. One who is connected with the Thus-Gone One does not need to build stupas, nor construct temples, nor give medicines and requisites to the monastic community. Why is this so? O Mahāmāyā! Because the sons and daughters of that lineage have already made offerings to my bodily relics. With stupas of seven precious substances, encircled within the pure world, adorned with divine banners, canopies, bells, and so forth, and honored with offerings of celestial and human incense and flowers, they become well served. After my passing into nirvāṇa, those who uphold this Dharma teaching, recite, write, and widely teach it, are as if building for me a vast, spacious, lofty temple of red copper, with thirty-two tiers of noble halls, beautifully adorned with flowers, making the dwelling places of the monastic community joyful, endowed with flourishing groves, proper resting places, abundant food and medicinal sustenance, fully furnished with all pleasant requisites. Such abundance, countless and immeasurable—by the hundreds, thousands, millions, tens of millions, hundreds of millions, or billions—are offered before the assembly of śrāvaka monks, who will also make proper use of them. From this it is understood that the sons and daughters of the lineage need not construct stupas or make direct offerings to the community. O Mahāmāyā! By upholding this Dharma teaching, they accomplish the perfections such as generosity and wisdom—what need is there to say more? When the sons and daughters of the lineage generate firm faith in this Dharma teaching, the merit they gain is measureless, like the boundless expanse of space in the ten directions above and below. This is equivalent to having made offerings to stupas, praising the Thus-Gone Ones, the śrāvakas, and bodhisattvas, and fulfilling all the virtuous practices such as patience, morality, and so forth.

Without flattery or jealousy, without malice, etc., possessing mindfulness, ability, and diligence, seeking the Buddha's teachings, and also being a meditator. Diligently engaging in correct placement within, being skilled in questioning and detailed differentiation, and also being able to answer countless questions. One who holds this Dharma teaching should be regarded as having entered the essence of Bodhi, heading towards the Bodhi tree. Whether they stand, sit, or walk, a stupa should be built for the Tathagata. Gods and humans alike should declare this to be the Tathagata's stupa. Thus spoke the Blessed One. Bodhisattva Maitreya asked the Buddha, "Having heard the exposition of this White Lotus Sutra Dharma teaching, how much merit will one who rejoices afterwards generate?" The Buddha declared, "Maitreya, after the Tathagata has passed into complete Nirvana, if someone hears this Dharma teaching, rejoices upon hearing it, and then departs, proclaiming it to others such as parents, who also hear and rejoice, and they likewise proclaim it to others, thus transmitting it from one to another until it reaches the fiftieth person, then the merit of this fiftieth listener, I shall explain: Suppose countless hundreds of thousands of kotis of worlds, wherein all beings are encompassed by the six realms and four modes of birth, whether with form or without form, all those belonging to the realm of sentient beings, if one person desires merit, this person gives all these beings the desired play and joyful enjoyment, giving them beautiful, pleasing amusements, and in order for them to enjoy the desired happiness, gives each being wealth filling the entire Jambudvipa, including conches, gold, silver, jewels, mani jewels, lapis lazuli, shells, coral, horse-drawn carriages, ox-drawn carriages, elephant-drawn carriages, multi-storied buildings, and houses, in this way continuously giving alms for eighty years. Then, this almsgiver thinks, 'I have made all these beings play, be happy, and live in comfort.' These beings have all reached the age of eighty."
