One should contemplate this body just as it is, and seeing this body thus, one should also contemplate the Tathāgata. When one sees thus, one truly sees the Tathāgata. The Bodhisattva then reflects: If I contemplate in this way, I shall behold the Tathāgata. Viewing this body thus, he thinks: I do not conceive this as the Tathāgata’s body, I do not apprehend it with discriminating awareness; likewise, all dharmas are not conceived, are not apprehended with discriminating awareness. Thus the nature of the Tathāgata’s body is such. This body is merely designated by name, and likewise all dharmas are merely designated by name. This designation is empty of inherent existence and unshaken in nature. The Tathāgata’s body also has such a nature. Regarding the Tathāgata’s body: there is nothing to obtain, nothing to realize, nothing to know, nothing to directly perceive, no result, no realization of result, no abiding, no support, no going, no coming, no birth, no cessation, no afflictions, no eradication of them, no sound, no characteristic, no non-characteristic, no exhaustion of craving, no exhaustion of aversion, no exhaustion of delusion, no aggregates, no elements, no sense-fields, no former limit, no latter limit, no middle limit. Thus all dharmas are likewise. The nature of the Tathāgata’s body is also such. Regarding the Tathāgata’s body, there is no movement, no action; so too all dharmas are the same. The nature of the Tathāgata’s body is only thus. Regarding the Tathāgata’s body: it is not seen, not heard, not smelled, not tasted, not touched, not conceived, not sleeping, not rising, not inhaling, not exhaling.

Without engaging in discriminating awareness, all phenomena are the same. Just as all dharmas appear, so too is the nature of the Tathāgata’s body. This Tathāgata body does not belong to the realm of desire, nor to the realm of form, nor to the formless realm. All dharmas are likewise, and the Tathāgata’s body possesses such a nature. This Tathāgata body has no inside or outside, no gap, no beginning, no destruction, no cause, no action, no taking, no abandoning, no doing, no creating, no falling, no truth, no falsehood, no attainment of ultimate truth, no pervasive craving, no arising of mind, no saṃsāra, no nirvāṇa. All dharmas are like this, and so is the nature of the Tathāgata’s body. When a practitioner seeks to enter the Tathāgata’s body and deeply contemplates thus, without fatigue day or night, he attains five direct knowledges, four pure Brahmā abodes, and unobstructed great fearlessness. He accomplishes the samādhi called “Universal Illumination,” and from that illumination arises vision beyond human sight, seeing immeasurable and countless Buddhas in the ten directions. With the divine ear free from obscuration, he hears all the teachings of those Buddhas; though taught by a single Tathāgata, all beings are pleased without obstruction. Then that great vigorous bodhisattva remains for seven months, taking no other food than the nourishment of wisdom, while the gods, through their superior intention, cause his body to shine with light. Thus that heroic bodhisattva, though wearing rough and withered robes, did not change them, and yet did not directly behold the manifested Tathāgata.

Even though the basis of the precepts has not been taken, look at those who have attained the wisdom of omniscience and desire to practice in this way. The Blessed One said to Light Protector: Other Bodhisattvas should also revere and honor the body of the Tathagata as the Great Diligent Bodhisattva does, and they should carefully distinguish and understand in such a way that the body of the Tathagata increases and does not decrease. In this way, the appearance of great wisdom will arise, and one will see countless Buddhas in the ten directions and hear them teaching the Dharma. Then, the Great Diligent Bodhisattva, having emerged from that forest, entered villages, cities, countries, and the retinues of royal palaces, teaching the Dharma to sentient beings, placing twenty thousand beings in the mind of unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Countless sentient beings were placed in the merit of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles. The two parents and the retinue of consorts, as well as all other retinues, were definitely determined to attain unexcelled perfect enlightenment. Thus, our teacher, King Shakya himself, was once known as the Great Diligent Bodhisattva, and we should follow him and other Bodhisattvas who possess excellent intentions. Moreover, in that sutra it is said: In the last five hundred years of the degenerate age, sons and daughters of the Bodhisattva vehicle lineage, unskilled in means, attached to and craving sensual pleasures, think that they will attain accomplishments and magical powers by making offerings to the body images of the Tathagata, and they think, "We are making offerings to the body images of the Tathagata, but others are not doing so." They praise themselves and disparage others with a little virtue, and they think of that as a livelihood. Apart from engaging in the work of offering to body images, they will not cherish the mind of receiving, reciting, practicing meditation, and properly attending within. At that time, both householders and renunciants will be diligent in such work.
