Considering: “What is this path of arising?” From conceptual thought arises suffering; if without thought, it does not arise—so one thinks. Thus, the cessation of thought and all desires is liberation from suffering, which is peace and freedom—so one reflects. Again one thinks: beings not yet liberated, is there anyone who is liberated? If so, if beings exist, there must be liberation; if no beings exist, then there is no liberation. Yet the affliction that harms beings arises from their own discriminative mind. Therefore, seekers of liberation must know: liberation is not something other, nor another aggregate—it is the very aggregates themselves freed. Hence, one contemplates: “That which is not apprehended as a being, that itself is liberation.” Then rising from meditation, with melodious voice one proclaims: “All conceptual thought enters the heap of suffering; the absence of thought brings cessation of suffering. No being is ever born, nor do dharmas ever cease. Apart from concepts there are no other dharmas—this itself is called liberation.” Hearing this sound, beings attained tolerance toward the inconceivable unborn dharma, and turned irreversibly toward unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Again, when the Brahmin youth named Wisdom lived, there appeared a great sage named Renowned Seer, a miracle-worker free of desire. From this, the Brahmin youth with ten thousand companions uttered the secret words of the Four Great Doubts and the equality of the three times. Then the youth Wisdom became the leader of all that assembly. The ten thousand youths upheld the secret words, yet all were remembered by one, who attained unobstructed knowledge reaching the far shore. Wisdom thought: “This secret word, I do not know its meaning; if I hold it without meaning, what benefit? I must seek its meaning.” Thinking thus, he dwelt in a monastery, sitting in equipoise, reflecting: “What is this secret word? If it is the mandala of wind, it has no base, no abiding; the wind-wheel moves, yet it is not established in east or other directions, and …
