I — the king said to the youth: ‘Then, ask accordingly.’ At that time, the Tathāgata named Radiance of Stars appeared in the world. The compassionate youth, while sleeping, in his dream perceived the Tathāgata Radiance of Stars abiding in the world, and heard a voice: ‘This question will become a revealed teaching.’ When night had passed, he spoke thus to his father the king. The king asked: ‘Youth, where does the Tathāgata Radiance of Stars dwell?’ Then the Tathāgata, knowing the king’s profound thought through miraculous power, revealed himself together with his entire assembly in the direction where he abided. The king beheld the Buddha, and by the light of the Buddha’s body all realms appeared illumined, and he grew deeply devoted in mind. The youth, together with the king and sixty thousand beings, went before the Tathāgata, asked all questions, and received answers; they became skilled in all treatises. The Tathāgata gave them predictions of enlightenment. The Blessed One declared: ‘Prince of Magadha shall become skilled in all scriptures.’ Thus the composition of omniscient wisdom is such, it is mastery of all treatises. He further said: ‘The states and diverse types of beings are produced by karma. Moreover, one should observe the meaning established by afflictions and mind.’ Again, when the bodhisattva was named Luminous Pure Exalted One, he dreamed and spoke correctly with the Tathāgata, seeing only the Buddha and none other. Then he inquired about worldly knowledge and the knowledge of dependent origination. The Buddha said: ‘Bodhisattvas, by the wish for unsurpassed complete enlightenment, should strive to know all treatises, and further should diligently strive in realization so that wisdom may enter the mind.’ He further declared: ‘Regarding past births, future occurrences, terms for persons, settlements, regions, the paths and destinations, and as much worldly knowledge as there is—one should become skilled in all of them.’

All these meanings were fully understood. Furthermore, a sage named "Skilled in Investigating the Extremes of Outsiders," having become detached through the path of outsiders, wondered, "For these various sentient beings, since they appear different from the causes of karma, is there a cause that prevents them from being born into different destinies?" He abided in the conception of self, and through afflictions, he engaged in actions, causing sentient beings to be born into different categories. "Then, I should thoroughly search for what this 'self' is." He contemplated thus, analyzing the five aggregates—whether form is the self, etc.—and ultimately became convinced of the absence of self. Having thus known the absence of self and what belongs to self, he arose from meditative absorption and taught sentient beings the meaning arising in dependence upon the absence of self and what belongs to self. Countless sentient beings thereby obtained forbearance towards the Dharma of non-arising. Furthermore, a sage named "Skilled in Knowing Death and Knowing Cessation," having become detached through the path of outsiders and possessing clairvoyance, saw that all conditioned phenomena are subject to destruction. He then pondered, "Is there a Dharma that does not arise and does not cease?" Upon investigation, he realized that whatever manifests and is fabricated will cease, while what is not fabricated will not cease. As he contemplated thus, separately discerning, he attained a vajra-like meditative absorption called "Manifest Delight" towards all Dharmas that do not manifest and are not fabricated. He understood that all Dharmas arise and cease due to the mind, and that the mind is the source of arising and ceasing all Dharmas. He examined this mind and found that it is formless, invisible, its essence devoid of manifestation, and that the mind cannot see the mind. He understood that the cessation of mind is not something to be fully cognized, and that when the manifestations of the mind, such as attachment, cease, a similar continuum arises again. He thoroughly understood all the continuums of the mind. Having known thus, he was without afflictions and realized that all Dharmas are of the nature of equality in the three times, and are not other than enlightenment. He taught such a Dharma to sentient beings, and countless sentient beings thereby obtained forbearance towards the Dharma of non-arising. Furthermore, a king named "Knowing the Past Extremes" knew that present happiness and suffering arise from past karma, and he knew the past kalpas.
