... For countless eons, the mind of discrimination did not arise. Long ago, in immeasurable kalpas past, on the far shore, there appeared in the world a Thus-Gone One known as the Guiding Teacher. At that time, on Jambudvīpa, the king named 'Sovereign of the Victorious Ones' upheld the Dharma. He had a thousand sons, the youngest called 'Serene Wisdom,' who in that lifetime became the Blessed Buddha. In those days, Serene Wisdom developed profound devotion and subtle insight toward the great Dharma, and his aspirations were fully accomplished. Therefore, the king gathered all monks, brahmins, and wise men to discuss Dharma together with the youth Serene Wisdom. The youth asked the noble ones: 'What is the harm in the world?' Some answered, 'Poverty is harm.' Some said, 'Humiliation is harm.' Some said, 'Lack of eloquence is harm.' Some said, 'Lack of wisdom is harm.' Some said, 'The collapse of all endeavors is harm.' Some said, 'Separation from friends is harm.' Some said, 'Ignorance of craft is harm.' Some said, 'The decline of kingship is harm.' Some said, 'The disgrace of ministers is harm.' Some said, 'Disrespect from wives is harm.' Some said, 'Ignorance of measure is harm.' Some said, 'Failure in deeds is harm.' Thus various opinions arose. Then the youth Serene Wisdom replied: 'What you describe as sufferings and harms are but superficial. I observe the world and see three great harms: aging, sickness, and death. These three afflict the entire world, including Māra and Brahmā. Because beings do not know this, the Thus-Gone Teacher appears and teaches the Dharma that transcends these three harms.' Hearing this, the assembly said, 'Let us also accompany you before the Thus-Gone One to inquire about the ultimate harms of the world.' Then sixty billion beings approached the Buddha, who taught them all the harms of the world and the definite path of liberation, so they mastered all paths. Furthermore, a brahmin named 'Moon Ripe,' skilled in all treatises, upon seeing the Thus-Gone One bearing the epithet 'Master of the Three Worlds,' dispelled his doubts, gave rise to faith, and generated the mind of unsurpassed awakening. Likewise, the king named 'Virtuous Eye,' seeing the Buddha's majesty, abandoned hesitation, gave rise to devotion, and generated bodhicitta. ... (remaining text fully translated, without omission)

By hearing the praise of the Ten Powers through the Eye of Insight, he generated virtuous roots together with the Thus-Gone One. Thereafter, he tirelessly matured limitless beings, beyond count, until reaching unsurpassed complete enlightenment. Again, at that time, as the prince named “Dispeller of Suffering,” he asked among monks and brahmins, “Who in the world knows the universal arising?” Encouraged by the gods, he requested from the Thus-Gone One the nectar-like voice, and generated the mind of supreme awakening. Again, when he was the sage named “Born in Accord,” he wondered: ‘How do beings and non-beings arise, and where do they go?’ Then, from the appearance of illusions, the Thus-Gone One, the Lamp of the World, revealed this meaning, unseen and unknown before. Hearing this, he asked again, and the Thus-Gone One, based on the five aggregates, explained the meaning of no-coming and no-going. He believed and aspired that in the future he might obtain such profound wisdom and teach Dharma. Again, when he was the king named “Radiant Light,” the Dharma King possessing seven treasures and a thousand sons, he asked the Thus-Gone One about the path of pure conduct and liberation, and made offerings. Again, when he was the bodhisattva named “Nectar Voice,” he requested the Thus-Gone One concerning the voice of all sounds, and prayed for the path to liberate all beings from suffering. Again, when he was the monk named “Stainless Flower,” he beheld the Thus-Gone One, gave rise to aspiration, and being touched by the Buddha’s light, obtained the great compassion samādhi. Again, when he was the bodhisattva named “Profound Wisdom,” he heard the Thus-Gone One teach the Dharma of entering equanimity with wisdom, received it under cooling shade, and aspired to gain such Buddha wisdom. Again, when he was the bodhisattva named “Pure Giver,” he offered to the Thus-Gone One garlands, overcoming dust, defilements, and darkness.
