Therefore, he said to all the merchants, "Pay homage to that Buddha." They all did as he said, and when the sound of reciting the homage to the Buddha three times was heard by that crocodile, it closed its mouth, and the merchants were able to escape. Moreover, when he was reborn as the Brahmin Victorious Protector, he understood through his own wisdom, without relying on others, that the basis of faults and merits arises from afflictions and virtuous dharmas. Therefore, by increasing virtuous dharmas and preventing non-virtue, he attained samadhi, did not fall back for sixty hundred thousand kalpas, and benefited sentient beings. Moreover, when he was reborn as the sage Light Excellent, he held many ascetic practices such as the five-tuft hairstyle, disregarding cold and heat, possessed countless austerities that disregarded the body, did not harm all beings, did not approach others' wives, did not drink alcohol, did not confuse his mind, guarded the minds of others, did not speak harsh words, and possessed countless qualities. He obtained the five superknowledges, was proficient in all crafts and sciences, and possessed countless distinctions in understanding time, dharma, self, and skillful means. At that time, he thought, "Although I know these distinctions of knowledge, I do not know where all these distinctions ultimately cease. Therefore, in the world, which shramanas and brahmins are skilled in this knowledge, and who can teach me?" In order to find them, he lived by begging and went to all the heretics. Those from beggars to outcastes made offerings to him, but he did not accept anyone's offerings. Because he did not accept offerings, his reputation for living by begging spread throughout the ten directions. At that time, the King of Snow Mountains transformed into the Buddha Dipamkara Bodhisattva, named the sage All-Knowing Light, who possessed the five superknowledges. He entered into a samadhi called "Observing All," and knew all the behaviors of all sentient beings' minds, etc. He saw Light Excellent living by begging with his divine eye and understood his thoughts, thinking, "He does not understand the definitive arising of strength and non-strength, how pitiful." Therefore, he generated compassion.

Then, that person descended from the king of snow mountains as quickly as stretching or bending an arm, and sat before Light. He prostrated to Light and asked, "By what means can one know the conduct of all sentient beings, and understand strength and non-strength, etc.?" Light replied, "By practicing Dharma giving without stinginess, gathering pure knowledge, rejoicing in and giving to those with wisdom, gathering much knowledge, and seeking the wisdom of prajna, etc., one can attain that sacred wisdom." Furthermore, when he was reborn as a king named "Seeing Obstruction," he saw that all arising dharmas could be seen as obstructions, and thus he taught the Dharma to many living beings. Moreover, when he was reborn as a king named "Tasting Flavors and Skilled in Faults," although he knew the faults of tasting the flavors of all dharmas, he did not know how to escape. He thought, "Who knows the way of escape?" and went to lie down. The Buddha, endowed with the thirty-two marks, praised, "Excellent! Non-manifestation is escape, and fabrication is non-escape." Hearing these words, he comprehended the path to enlightenment. Furthermore, in the past, there was a Brahmin named "Ishvara Deva," who relied on external paths, possessing detachment, magical powers, and majesty. He placed hundreds of thousands of living beings into various kinds of knowledge, and by abiding in the first dhyana, he accomplished the five superknowledges. He thought, "This first dhyana also has flavor, and tasting flavor also has faults. In the Buddha's teachings, all internal and external sources of birth have flavor and faults. Therefore, there must be a path of escape that is without flavor and faults." By properly focusing his mind in this way, he obtained the tolerance of non-birth and placed countless sentient beings in the tolerance of non-birth. Furthermore, during the time of the Tathagata Amitabha, the Bhagavan himself was reborn as a king named "Fame and Virtue," and upon hearing the Dharma taught beginning with the seven branches of enlightenment, he obtained the tolerance of non-birth. Maudgalyayana's son asked, "How should we understand the Tathagata's statement that he obtained the tolerance of non-birth from Dipamkara Buddha?"
